Gate Closes On Prime Cup Run

Dowgate 5-0 Ashton Prime

A battling display at Tonbridge Farm against league high-flyers Dowgate ended with a flattering 5-0 win for the home side.

Prime introduced Barker and Moaby to make their debuts in the cup-tie, with Maynard returning to the midfield and Lower moved up front.

Dowgate immediately put Prime on the back-foot, forcing a flurry of corners and fine saves from an inspired Leigh.

A number of frantic goal-mouth scrambles went the way of Prime and the home team were starting to wonder if they would find a way past Leigh.

However, the goal eventually came 10 minutes before the break, with the striker nipping in to slot past Leigh.

Crucially a 2nd goal was scored in stoppage time at the end of the first half. Another goal-mouth scramble resulted in the floppy-haired striker netting.

Prime were being over-run in midfield and in a bid to counter this, Walsh was introduced at the start of the 2nd half with the impressive Maynard moving to the wing.

A 20 minute period of Prime pressure followed with Ellis' trickery down the left getting him free to fire low from an angle, but the keeper's legs got in the way of his 3rd of the season.

From the resulting corner, again Ellis was there to loop a header towards the far post, but again the keeper gathered.

This was as good as it got for Prime though, and despite the best efforts of Gilbert and an impressive Barker, a 3rd goal killed off the tie.

Whiting was introduced to replace the ineffective Lower and, under his manager's instructions to chase and harry everything, he injected some much needed zest and produced a couple of sublime pieces of skill.

However, 2 late goals meant the home side went away with the spoils - but the match was not without it's plus points for Prime.
