Wanderers Edge 9 Goal Thriller
Brenchley Wanderers Reserves 5-4 Ashton Prime
Boosted by their win over Penshurst, Prime headed to mid-table Brenchley high on confidence. Mellors, Flamank and Barker returned to the starting line-up, with Leaver returning only to the bench.
With a strong wind behind them, the home side piled on early pressure, and when Leigh's goal-kick held up in the wind and deceived Goldsmith, Brenchley's midfield star Ben Sceal burst onto the ball and lashed high into the roof of the net.
The wind assisted Wanderers continued to pile forward and the Prime defence was breached again as a long ball cleared Gilbert and the striker rolled home beyond Leigh.
A third goal came when Prime failed to clear a corner and the ball eventually came to the back post and their midfielder nodded home.
Prime needed desperately to get a foothold in the game and they got it when Smith-Foreman's trickery down the right wing gave him time and space to pick out Mellors, who turned the ball home to give Prime hope.
With time expiring in the frst half, Leigh misjudged a through-ball leaving the Brenchley striker an empty net to roll in a crucial 4th goal.
A 3 goal deficit at half-time meant Prime had it all to do in the second period, but with the wind at their backs, a determined Prime forced their way back into the game.
Firstly, Goldsmith's 25 yard curler had the keeper at full stretch. Then his wickedly inswinging corner was bundled home by his midfield partner Matthews.
Goldsmith hit another long range free kick with pace and curl, and with the keeper fumbling, Matthews was there to force home his 2nd and Prime were right back in it.
Brenchley were being put under immense pressure and when Ellis flicked on, Matthews acrobatically smashed in his hat-trick off the underside of the bar to make it 4-4.
With Flamank marauding down the left, Prime pressed hard for a winner - but Brenchley looked dangerous on the break and Prime needed the impressive combination of Gilbert and Barker to be at their best.
However, in the last minute a loose ball dropped to a Brenchley midfielder on the edge of the box and he hit his shot sweetly, beyond the despairing Leigh to seal a dramatic win.
