Prime Come Up Smelling Of Roses
Roselands Reserves 0-1 Ashton Prime
A determinded display from Prime at Roselands gave The Numbers a surprise 2nd away win of the season and maintained their excellent start to 2007.
Prime were without Mellors and Flamank, so Buckland returned at right-back and Walters was given his first start up-front.
Prime started brightly, but it was the home team who had the first chance when a long ball left their striker clean through, but Leigh did well to smother his effort.
With Ellis and Walters linking up well down the left, Prime won a series of corners. From one of these, Goldsmith's inswinging corner curled straight in at the near post as the Roselands defender on the line failed to keep the ball out, under pressure from Matthews.
Prime then sat back on their lead and their goal led a charmed life for the rest of the first half with Leigh kept busy and Gilbert and Barker working overtime to repel wave after wave of Roselands attacks.
Crucially, Prime got in ahead at half-time and started the second half solidly with French having an impressive display at left-back, and it was from his excellent interception that Prime sprung forward and Smith-Foreman tested the home keeper.
Roselands continued to pile forward but they were restricted largely to long range strikes which never troubled Leigh.
Infact, Prime looked more dangerous on the break and Ellis had a header saved from a corner, before minutes later, he squared for Skovborg-Hansen whose tame effort was comfortably saved.
The hard-working Walters was replaced after an hour, giving Rhee his debut and Leaver came on for Buckland to shore things up at the back.
Prime endured a tricky last 15 minutes as Roselands hurled long balls into the Prime area, but with Gilbert tackling anything that moved and Barker's pace sweeping in behind, the visitors clung on to claim their first clean sheet of the season, and 3 valuable points.
