Prime Edge To Win With Barn-Storming Finish

Ashton Prime 1-0 Brenchley Wanderers Reserves

After narrowly losing 5-4 at Brenchley earlier in the season, Prime were determined to turn the tables against their mid-table opponents.

Whiting came in between the sticks in Leigh's continued absence, and Barker, Flamank and Goldsmith returned to the starting XI.

Prime started brightly and Skovborg-Hansen's pace was threatening to tear the visitors apart.

He eased past the full-back inside the first 15 minutes and squared for Smith-Foreman who shot over with the goal at his mercy.

A torn hamstring just 5 minutes later foced the skipper from the action, with Rhee entering the fray.

Brenchley's physical approach was not getting them far with Gilbert and Barker looking solid and Flamank and French keeping the wingers quiet.

At the interval it was goalless and Prime felt they could push on for the win.

But Brenchley started the half brightly and their tricky left-winger looked dangerous, and Whiting was at full stretch to keep out a succession of long throws into the box.

The visitors looked set to be awarded a penalty when a long ball released their striker who rounded Whiting before being body-checked by the keeper.

Mystiyingly, the ref only gave an indirect free kick inside the box, which was wasted, much to the relief of the Numbers.

With Walsh and Matthews entering the action, the hard-working Mellors was pushed up front.

An incisive through ball released Ellis who squared for Mellors to slot home, only for it to be ruled out by a ridiculously late flag.

But with just 10 minutes left, Mellors cashed in on a mix up between the Brenchley keeper and Centre-Back, to roll the ball into an empty net and hand Prime the points.
