Prime Hit For Six

Leigh 6-2 Ashton Prime

Following last week's win over Brenchley, Prime went into this game confident of springing a surprise.

However, they were without Mellors, Smith-Foreman and Skovborg-Hansen, and their chances were further damaged when Leaver failed to show.

That meant a last minute reshuffle with Barr coming in at right-back and French moved to the right-wing.

These two sides met on the opening day of the season and on that day, Whiting's early screamer gave the Numbers the lead.

They repeated that feat again here as Leigh's goal kick was flicked on by Goldsmith into the path of the pacy Rhee whose lob appeared to be heading wide until the spin took effect and sent the ball into the roof of the net.

Leigh were rattled and with Walters and Flamank in particular cutting the home defence to ribbons, it seemed only a matter of time before the lead was extended.

From one surging run, Flamank went through the entire Leigh defence before being denied by the keeper.

However, Prime did double the lead when Goldsmith's through-ball caused confusion and the home keeper drilled his clearance into the centre-back and the rebound flew into the net.

Leigh came back into the game and Prime keeper Leigh had to make a couple of smart stops, but on the break Goldsmith again released Rhee who was denied a 2nd by the keeper.

At half-time, Sturmey replaced the stricken Barr with French moving back to right-back.

Leigh started the half with real intent but they got a real break when Gilbert was harshly adjudged to have tripped their striker on the edge of the box. His protestations earned him a yellow card, and things got worse when a penalty was mystifyingly awarded.

Leigh guessed the right way but couldn't keep out the spot kick.

Moments later Leigh levelled with the home side making the most of Barker's ankle injury picked up at the start of the half.

Ellis was replaced by Walter, but the flow of the game had changed and the home side ran in 4 more unanswered goals to give them a highly flattering final score.
