Makeshift Prime Beaten Again
AFC Valour 5-1 Ashton Prime
With Prime without 20 players, including 4 goalkeepers, things did not look good for the Numbers going into a game they needed to win to avoid finishing in the bottom 2.
With no other willing volunteers, Goldsmith was reluctantly forced to don the gloves, with Sturmey, Gilbert and French coming into the defence.
The visitors got off to the worst possible start as on Valour's first attack, hesitation between 3 Prime defenders enabled the Valour midfielder to gently lob over the helpless keeper.
Indeed in the first 20 minutes, Prime simply did not compete and Goldsmith had to make a fine fingertip save, before Sturmey cleared off the line, as Valour produced wave after wave of attacks.
Prime started battling into the game with Walters making inroads and Bishop and Smith-Foreman looking capable of causing the home side problems.
But with 15 minutes of the half to go, a simple long ball released Valour's ginger haired striker who expertly lobbed the keeper.
After some harsh words at half-time, Prime started the second half in a much better vain, and they were rewarded when Matthews chipped the keeper from fully 30 yards.
But immediately the 2 goal lead was restored with the Prime defence cut to ribbons.
The goal seemed to deflate Prime, who had introduced Walter for Rhee on the right, as Valour continued to find plenty of space in behind the Prime back 4.
2 further goals were added, with the aid of some dubious decisions from the ref who barely gave Prime a decision all game.
Smith-Foreman and Ellis both missed good late chances to reduce the arrears, but the result was already decided.
