Oxo comeback is pure gravy

Oxted Orient 4-1 Ashton Prime

Ashton Prime's 2007/8 season got off to a disappointing start as The Numbers went down 4-1 to The Orient.

Prime gave starts to debutants Mazurkiewicz and Sankey, with Allcorn making a welcome return between the sticks.

The game started frenetically, despite the soaring temperatures, and although the home side looked impressive in possession, it was Prime who looked more dangerous, with Rhee and Skovborg-Hansen combining well down the right.

On the half-hour mark, skipper Skovborg-Hansen chased onto a ball over the top and rounded the keeper, only to be cynically hacked on the edge of the box with the goal at his mercy.

From the resultant free-kick, Mellors unleashed a blockbusting drive which flew through the wall and into the roof of the net to give Prime the lead.

The home side were stung into action and Allcorn needed to be at his best to turn away a flurry of chances.

But with just 5 minutes to go to the break, Oxted levelled as Prime failed to clear, despite having several opportunities to do so, and the Oxted striker stroked home left-footed, beyond Allcorn's dive.

At half-time, Sturmey, Barr and Whiting entered the fray to join Garside who had moments earlier replaced the stricken Flamank - whose twisted ankle was not going to be risked any further in the friendly.

The change in personnel disrupted Prime totally and with the impressive Oxted right-winger wreaking havoc, the home side soon took the lead, and then doubled their advantage with a third.

Prime had lost their attacking threat but the excellent Mazurkiewicz kept Prime in it with a series of superb challenges.

However, it was from his mis-placed pass that Oxted added number 4, with Allcorn again left with no chance.

Buckland, Sankey and Goldsmith returned to the action in the last quarter, and Buckland looked especially lively down the right wing.

Prime's best move of the game came as first Sankey and then Garside worked the ball down the left, but from Goldsmith's curling cross, both Rhee and Whiting narrowly failed to pull a late consolation back.

Man of the Match: Mazurkiewicz - impressive debut from the new signing.
