Smash and grab finish deflates Prime
Frant 4-3 Ashton Prime
Prime were given a bitter pill to swallow, on what proved to be a frustrating opening day of the season.
The visitors were much quicker out of the blocks, and played some neat football, keeping possession well but without testing the Frant keeper. Pressure persisted as there was only one team in it, and Prime finally reaped the fruits of their labour with Gilbert's deflected shot inside the area.
Frant were on the back foot, with Leigh barely getting a touch in the Prime goal. However, the game took a change when a dubious decision by the referee left Jamie Barker astonished by his choice of action, awarding a penalty after the ball accidentally brushed his arm whilst clearing. A text book spot kick followed, as Frant found some spirit. Another goal followed soon after leaving Prime disheartened at the break.
Prime started the second period brightly and equalised when a penalty of their own was awarded. Smith-Foreman converted well after he was fouled in the box by the clumsy Frant centre back.
Frant responded well however, with their kick and chase style paying dividends once more, as they took the lead, again. Prime rallied and introduced Carl Barker and Sankey into the battle. They were not to be outdone, with Mellors rounding the keeper after a long ball was completely missed by the veteran Frant stopper, “Pastie”. The Cornishman landed flat on his face leaving Mellors clean through to slot the ball home. 3-3!
It was a classic Ashton Prime finish however. Nerves were well and truly frayed in a goalmouth mix up, leaving the home side to grab a last minute winner and all 3 points in the process!
