Prime's slow start proves costly
Ashton Prime 2-6 East Peckham Juniors
For the second time in 3 matches, Prime faced the league's strongest team - this time at Bayham.
There were changes galore following last week's meek display against Paddock Wood. Leigh returned in goal, while Leaver, Ellis and Goldsmith came into the back 4. Skovborg-Hansen relinquished the keeper's gloves to return to his favoured right-wing position, with Mazurkiewicz in the centre of midfield.
The visitors started well but were lucky to take the lead on 10 minutes. There seemed little danger as Ellis chased a long through ball, but his heels were clipped by the Juniors' winger and inexplicably, the ref didn't give the seemingly obvious free-kick. This left a 3 on 2 situation which the visitor's striker finished off well with a chip over the advancing Leigh.
They doubled their lead mid-way through the half as their unmarked striker squeezed his header in from an acute angle.
A third goal soon followed, and it seemed Prime were in danger of sinking without trace.
But urged on by the irrespressible Mellors, The Numbers found a way back into the game, as Ellis first hit the post following a corner, and in the panic that ensued, the East Peckham defender hacked the ball into Ellis' knee and the ball ricocheted into the net for 3-1 at half-time.
Prime's tails were up, and despite the slope being against them, they started the 2nd period strongly, with Skovborg-Hansen making some surging runs down the wing and Goulding becoming increasing influential in the midfield. Smith-Foreman replaced Matthews as Prime went for the jugular.
But the visitor's were gifted the crucial 4th goal after the normally reliable Goldsmith failed to cut out a tame through ball, leaving the striker to smash home - and Goldsmith berating himself!
A 5th goal followed shortly after, but again Prime battled back as Garside - who had just replaced the stricken skipper Skovborg-Hansen produced an excellent free-kick which the keeper spilled under pressure and Mellors smashed home from close range to get a deserved goal.
But East Peckham had the final say, as Barker and Leigh got in each other's way trying to clear a header off the line, and the Juniors' striker was on the spot to prod home.
