Barker late-show keeps Prime run going

Dowgate 2-3 Ashton Prime

A buoyant Prime travelled to Tonbridge confident of picking up more points after their morale-boosting win against Frant last week. The Numbers were hit by the absence of Coppard, Gilbert, Mellors and Skovborg-Hansen - but French came in between the sticks, Tom Matthews came into defence, Rob Matthews joined Goulding in the centre of the park and Goldsmith moved up front.

Dowgate started the game well and forced a string of corners in the first 10 minutes, but somehow Prime scrambled the ball clear on each occasion.

But Goulding and Matthews slowly began to take over the midfield, with Matthews in particular flying into tackles. Kneebone and Carl Barker were also linking up well and looking dangerous on the break.

It was Prime's turn to dominate and they forced a sequence of corners themselves, which Goldsmith curled in dangerously on the breeze.

It was from one such corner after 30 mins that Prime opened the scoring. Goldsmith's near post corner was cleared back out to him, he then skipped inside a wreckless challenge from Dowgate's centre-back before hitting a cross-shot with his left foot, which the hapless keeper could only help into the net.

Prime were really turning the screw and from a flowing move down the right, Mazurkiewicz found Kneebone who got to the byline but his cross was held by the keeper with Goldsmith and Barker in attendance.

Dowgate's attacks were sporadic and their pacey striker's attempts to break through were thrawted by the excellent Jamie Barker and Walsh combination.

But the home side got a bizarre equaliser as Prime again struggled to clear a corner and in the melee that ensued, Dowgate's striker back-heeled the ball beyond French.

The second half started with Prime still on the front foot and Ellis was finding more and more space down the left hand side and was free to roam forward with Tom Matthews keeping the right-winger in check. The Numbers were passing the ball around well and forcing the home side to defend, but on the break Prime were hit with the sucker punch.

A long ball split the Prime defence and French was helpless to stop their striker putting them ahead against the run of play.

Rob Matthews lost his cool and talked himself into his first ever Prime booking as the visitor's frustration grew.

Prime kept their heads though and were denied an equaliser when Goldsmith's driven cross picked out his strike-partner, but Barker's header was excellently tipped onto the bar by the keeper.

Garside and Barr entered the action as Goldsmith and Goulding were replaced. Prime were soon back on terms at 2 all as Kneebone was given the freedom of Tonbridge Farm to slot home as the home side appealed in vain for an offside flag.

At the other end, French produced a stunning reflex save to keep the scores level - somehow stopping a point-blank shot right on the line. This gave Prime fresh belief and with 5 minutes left, Garside released Kneebone who squared for the tireless Carl Barker to slot home the winner and start off wild celebrations from the visitors.

Man of the Match: BarkerJ - Awesome display again - just edged it from Walsh.
