Prime cup hopes end in Maidstone

West Farleigh Reserves 4-1 Ashton Prime

On the back of 2 consecutive wins, Prime travelled to West Farleigh for a cup quarter-final in confident mood. But it was a shadow Prime side without as many as 10 squad members.

Maszka made his debut in goal, with Sturmey and Gilbert coming into the defence. Davis started on the right-side of midfield, with Leaver returning in the centre. Smith-Foreman joined skipper Goldsmith up front.

The home side started much the brighter and were knocking the ball around impressively, leaving Prime chasing shadows. But somehow Prime kept it goalless until from a long throw, the ball dipped on Ellis as he tried to head clear, and a penalty was harshly awarded as the ball brushed his arm. There was no mistake from the spot as Maszka was beaten to his right.

Prime's attacking forrays were sporadic, but Goldsmith and Smith-Foreman worked hard to take some pressure off the defence but were sorely lacking in support.

Farleigh's second came down the right and confusion in the Prime defence allowed an easy finish.

Two further goals were added before half-time as Prime's threadbare side began to struggle.

At the break, Maszka moved into his favoured left-back position with Sturmey taking the gloves.

It proved a positive move as the left-back confidently brought the ball out of defence and Sturmey's handling was assured in goal.

Barnham replaced Davis and slotted in at right-back with Mazurkiewicz pushed further forward.

The home side seemed to be running short of ideas in the second half, with Gilbert and Walsh excelling and the defence looking watertight. Indeed Sturmey was rarely asked to make a save of any note, and when Farleigh did break through, the striker shot wide as Sturmey advanced.

Matthews and Leaver were starting to win the midfield battle and Prime looked increasingly dangerous and scored a deserved consolation when Gilbert's free-kick was not cleared and the ball dropped to Leaver who smashed home.

Prime pushed for a second, but time ran out on them and their cup dream.

Man of the Match: Walsh - Held the defence together.
