Woodwork thrawts The Numbers

Brenchley Wanderers Reserves 3-2 Ashton Prime

Prime travelled to Brenchley for their penultimate game of the season, knowing that they needed at least a point to give themselves a chance of climbing off the bottom of the table.

Mellors pulled out at the last minute, meaning Manager's Player of the Season Skovborg-Hansen took the gloves. With Jamie Barker unavailable and Owen Walsh running late, Adam Garside was given a run-out at Centre-Back.

Ellis and Kneebone returned down the flanks, and Excell responded to an SOS call to play upfront alongside Goldsmith.

The home side who ran out easy winners in the reverse fixture started uphill and looked set to take an early lead when Garside's innocuous looking pass-back bobbled horribly and Skovborg-Hansen's scuffed clearance fell to the feet of the advancing Brenchley striker, but he then redeemed himself with a supreme double-save.

On the 20 minute mark Brenchley did take the lead as the keeper was this time helpless to stop the advancing striker who finished well.

But within 5 minutes Prime were level. Goldsmith, Excell and Kneebone linked up well on a swift break and Kneebone kept his cool to slot home his 6th of the season.

Prime began to dominate proceedings with the slope assisting them in the first 45. Matthews and Goulding were winning the midfield battle and Garside in particular was having a blinder at Centre-Back.

Most of Prime's good work came down the right-wing and Kneebone was so unlucky not to give Prime the lead right on half-time as his hooked effort hit the bar as the whistle sounded.

The second half started as the first had finished, with Prime on the front foot, but the home side started to make the advantage of the slope pay as they upped the tempo.

They took the lead when their pacy winger burst through and although Skovborg-Hansen got a hand to his effort, he couldn't keep it out.

A third goal soon followed as the tricky winger flicked beyond Barnham's challenge before slotting home.

Walters and Walsh both joined the action and Prime started to recover from this double blow and cause their hosts a few problems.

The best chance fell to Goldsmith from Excell's cute reverse pass. He broke the offside trap and had all the time in the world to get his shot away, but he failed to take the ball cleanly on the bumpy surface and his eventual shot was smothered.

Prime pressure continued and Goldsmith's back-post header from a corner was headed off the line before Ellis' header was blocked inadvertantly by Excell on the line as Brenchley failed to clear.

Eventually Prime broke through when Walters' inswinging was flicked into his own net by the Brenchley Centre-Back.

There were still 5 minutes left and Prime threw the kitchen sink at Brenchley as they sought a deserved point and they thought they'd got it when Skvoborg-Hansen came up for a free-kick with seconds left and from his flick, Ellis found himself clean through, but the home keeper crucially smothered his effort and the final whistle soon followed.

Man of the Match: Garside - Superb performance playing out of position
