Hawks clinch second in season finale

Hawkenbury III 4-1 Ashton Prime

Prime went into the last game of the season with little but pride to play for following their narrow loss to Brenchley.

Mellors returned between the sticks, with Player's Player of the Season Jamie Barker replacing Garside at Centre-Back.

The match started in torrential rain which barely eased up during the match, making conditions treacherous.

Player-Manager Streeter was on the field from the start in a noticably strenthened Hawks line-up from when the sides met just 10 days ago.

The Hawks put in nearly all the early running, with Prime's back 4 stretched, but somehow, with Mellors again in supreme form, Prime kept the scores level.

It stayed that way until the 20 minute mark, when Goldsmith inexplicably handled an inswinging corner in a freak moment of madness, and the Hawks striker made no mistake - smashing down the centre of goal, as Mellors dived.

The goal seemed to wake Prime up and they started to come into the game. They were soon awarded a free-kick fully 30 yards out and Goldsmith took responsibility, keen to make amends for his earlier howler.

He smashed his free-kick over the wall and somehow the keeper got fingertips to it to tip it onto the angle of post and bar, but Goulding reacted first to nod home the rebound.

With the rain lashing down, the Hawks won their second penalty of the half as Barnham was adjudged to have fouled their tricky winger.

This time however, Mellors stayed where he was and parried the striker's penalty and his misery was compounded as he smashed the rebound high over the bar, giving Prime a reprieve.

Indeed Prime nearly took the lead when Goldsmith flicked on for Excell whose twinkle-toes bedazzled 2 defenders before sliding in an inviting cross which was just beyond Ellis, and Kneebone narrowly failed to force home at the back post.

Prime started the second half heading uphill and knew that their best chances would come if they shot on site with conditions deteriorating.

Goldsmith showed the way as he hammered in another long-distance free-kick from fully 35 yards, which forced the keeper into a smart save.

But with the slope assisting them, the Hawks soon re-took the lead with Mellors for once unable to keep them at bay.

A third goal soon followed as a through-ball held up in a puddle as Barnham tried to let it run through to the keeper, but the two collided and the Hawks striker had the simple task of squaring for his strike partner to finish.

Hawks confidence was growing and they scored an excellent 4th goal with a sweeping move and finish.

Walters and Sturmey joined the action in the last 20 minutes and Prime gave defenders Gilbert and Barker a run up-front and the latter had a decent half chance that he hit straight at the keeper.

There was still time for Goldsmith to glance a header wide from Matthews' inswinging corner, and for Walters to curl in a perfect late cross that was scrambled clear, but the final whistle sounded and the curtain came down on The Numbers 2007/8 campaign.
