Leigh blunder gifts Wells a point

Ashton Prime 2-2 Tunbridge Wells United Reserves

Prime were down to the bare bones for this encounter, with several players injured or unavailable. Leigh returned in goal and Garside and Ellis slotted into the left-hand side. With 4 regular strikers missing, Prime swooped at the 11th hour to sign Excell, who made his Prime debut.

The game was fairly even for the first 20 minutes, with the Prime backline coping well with Wells' prolific striker Hickmott.

Prime's best attacking play was coming down the left in the first half, with Ellis beating the visitors' right-back at will and crossing dangerously towards Mellors and Excell. Even Goldsmith managed to break forward from centre-back to link up with Ellis down the left, but his cut-back just eluded Leaver.

Prime deservedly took the lead when a flowing move resulted in Mellors squaring for Ellis who half-volleyed home from 10 yards with his weaker right foot.

The Numbers had to battle to keep their lead, and needed firstly an excellent save by Leigh from a free-kick and then a desperate goal-line clearance from the impressive Garside.

Prime started the second half well and immediately doubled their lead. Mellors found space again to put Excell in down the right channel. He still had plenty to do, but he cut inside and arrowed an unstoppable shot past the keeper and into the roof of the net.

The visitors responded by making 2 changes and reverting to a more direct style of play, and they were soon back in it when they cleared a Prime corner and the long ball meant a foot-race between Barker and Hickmott. Barker got there first but the striker got away with jostling him off the ball before despatching his finish beyond Leigh's dive.

Prime's backline were now under intense pressure with only sporadic breaks from Kneebone and the tiring Ellis down the flanks. Mazurkiewicz had to make a couple of excellent last-ditch tackles to keep Prime in front.

Wells' pressure eventually got them a dubious penalty as their tall centre-back backed into Barker who was cruelly adjudged to have fouled him.

The penalty however was weak and Prime felt justice was done as Leigh superbly dived to his left to keep the ball out, before Ellis hooked the ball clear.

Prime seemed to have weathered the storm, with Carlton coming on to secure the backline. But in typical Prime fashion, they conceded a soft equaliser in the last minute, as a long hopeful cross from the right touchline bounced on the 6 yard line and eluded Leigh and nestled in the corner of the net.

Man of the Match: Ellis - Always a threat until he tired late on.
