Prime end season with 5-star display

Paddock Wood Reserves 2-5 Ashton Prime

Prime went into their final fixture of the season knowing that a win would lift them - temporarily at least - into 6th place in the table.

Goldsmith was able to name an unchanged starting XI, but Excell and Davis returned to the bench.

Prime started positively and took the lead after just 5 minutes when Walters' inswinging corner deceived the Wood keeper and nestled in the far corner of the net.

The Numbers were playing with confidence and were passing the ball around nicely, but they could not add to their tally and they paid for this on 25 minutes, when Gilbert's back pass bobbled horribly for Kerton and his sliced clearance fell perfectly for their onrushing striker to knock home into an empty net.

This seemed to knock Prime out of their stride and the home side were having success with their direct style, but Mazurkiewicz and Gilbert and the full-backs stood firm.

Goulding, captain for the day in his final appearance had a solid first half, winning a couple of crucial tackles and headers.

On the stroke of half-time, Prime got their noses back in front as Mellors showed neat control before coolly slotting in beyond the advancing keeper.

Prime started the second half well, with Excell replacing Matthews on 50 minutes, with the impressive Walker moving back into midfield.

Soon Prime increased their lead as another surging run from Walker and a slide-rule through ball left Skovborg-Hansen through. He rounded the keeper and slid home from a tight angle.

At the other end Wood were looking increasingly dangerous as the game got stretched and Kerton produced an excellent save with the Wood striker clean through.

Flamank replaced Sander at right-back and it was down the right side that Prime scored number four as Kneebone's deep cross-shot sailed over the keeper and into the net.

Moments before the goal, Goulding took a painful blow and was forced from the field after 70 minutes of his final appearance, with a suspected broken toe. It was a sad end for the Clubman of the year, but he was warmly applauded as he limped off, giving Davis a run out.

Prime seemed to be cruising towards an easy win, but when Wood pulled one back with a neat finish from a flick on, alarm bells were ringing.

But after a frantic five minutes, Prime broke down the other end and when Mellors' shot was only parried, Skovborg-Hansen was there to bravely head home with the keeper trying to punch clear.

Prime had chances to add a sixth - the best when Mazurkiewicz met a Mellors corner, but Excell could only divert his effort over the bar.

The Numbers closed out the final 10 minutes with ease and sealed their third win in a row to end the season in style.

Man of the Match: Walker - Exceptional performance - rarely gave the ball away.
