Brenchley battered at Bayham

Ashton Prime 8-2 Brenchley Wanderers Reserves

Following two successive 1-0 defeats, Prime hosted Brenchley Wanderers Reserves at Bayham, but The Numbers were desperately short of players.

Latter was a late withdrawal, meaning Tony Leigh was called out of temporary retirement between the sticks. At the back Mazurkiewicz, Gilbert and Jamie Barker were all absent, leaving Barnham, Sankey and skipper Goldsmith to fill in.

With Walters and Kneebone missing from midfield, Smith-Foreman and Sturmey made the starting line-up, while Excell was joined up front by emergency signing Webb.

Prime got off to the perfect start as Excell and Webb linked up well and Excell coolly slotted home after just 2 minutes.

A rout was on the cards when Excell found himself in space again just moments later and he exquisitely lobbed the advancing keeper to put Prime 2 up within 5 minutes.

Brenchley started to find their feet and the makeshift Prime back 4 were being put under increasing pressure, but with Matthews and Smith-Foreman working overtime in the heart of the pitch, Prime weathered the storm and went 3 up when Webb found himself clean through to slot home.

The visitors were starting to get some joy through their tricky number 10 and they pulled one back when Garside allowed his man to turn and get a cross in which deflected off Goldsmith onto the post, before falling straight to the Brenchley striker who was left with a simple tap in.

Wanderers visibly grew in confidence and Leigh and his back 4 had to be alert to keep them at bay.

Prime crucially got their 4th goal before the break. Sankey and Sturmey linked up down the left before Sturmey hit a sumptuous cross-field ball to Skovborg-Hansen in acres of space down the right-wing.

The pacy winger drilled a cross into the near post and Webb finished with aplomb.

There was still time for Webb to complete his hat-trick before the break as Prime went in 5-1 up.

With the slope in their advantage in the second half, Brenchley pushed men forward and Prime's goal was coming under increasing pressure - but it was Prime who extended their lead as Skovborg-Hansen was released down the right and his pace took him beyond the left-back and he finished expertly with the outside of his right boot.

But Brenchley kept battling and their left-winger soon made it 6-2 with a curling left-footer from the edge of the box that gave Leigh no chance.

It was nearly 6-3 moments later, but Leigh did well to tip onto the crossbar as Prime concentration drifted.

The Numbers continued to look dangerous on the break and Skovborg-Hansen and Excell contrived to miss a string of chances before Excell eventually completed his hat-trick with 20 minutes to go, and then he completed the rout by rounding the keeper and sliding home off the inside of the post with time running out.

Man of the Match: Smith-Foreman - Ran himself into the ground, playing in an unfamiliar position.
