AFC Valour Reserves 1-2 Ashton Prime

Saturday 10th April 2010, Horsmonden Sports Ground

Prime travelled to Horsmonden to face old rivals AFC Valour Reserves, knowing a win would surely seal 6th place.

Davis was the only absentee from last week's win against Paddock Wood, with Flamank coming in to start at left-back. Ellis and Sander both returned to the bench, but sadly Garside was absent - presumably busy updating his wallchart after scoring at least once in training during the week!

The Valour side was boosted by a couple of first-teamers and they had also added a player with blistering pace and skill (no - not Barney!) wearing number 7 and he troubled Barnham early on.

But Prime settled into the game well with Abu and Goldsmith winning the ball both in the air and on the floor, and the back 4 all looking solid.

Prime won a corner after an attack down the right wing and Walters' excellent curling delivery found Matt Walker coming in round the back and he directed his header perfectly into the net from a tight angle - his first goal for The Numbers.

Straight from the kick off, Valour's number 7 went on a mazy run that was halted by Goldsmith at the expense of a free-kick - another warning sign for Prime.

But from then on Barnham got much tighter to him and won several excellent challenges to stem his attacking runs.

Excell and Walters were both working hard down the wings to help their full-backs and Goldsmith was comfortably winning every header in the midfield.

Barker was being well shackled by Cooper and the other Valour centre-back, but he still looked dangerous and linked up well with Joe Walker who was finding some space between the defence and midfield of the home side.

Clear-cut chances were hard to come by, but Goldsmith flashed a 20-yarder just wide and then at the other end, Prime old-boy Mellors cut inside and curled an effort towards the far corner, but Kerton saved well.

Prime went in 1 up at the break, but knew they were playing against the wind and the slope in the second half, and Valour came at them from the kick-off.

The home side had introduced the burly Steve Ednie to challenge for some aerial balls and he certainly gave them more presence.

With an hour played, the excellent Matt Walker made a horrible mistake and his air-kick allowed the Valour striker to square for his team-mate to finish beyond the dive of Kerton.

Valour were now all over Prime and it was all hands to the pump as Valour were denied the lead by the post as left-back Wareham curled an excellent free-kick around the wall - leaving Kerton helpless.

Some fresh legs were needed and Ellis replaced Goldsmith for the last third. The change worked perfectly as within minutes Prime re-took the lead.

Excell took a short corner to Walters who curled a perfect cross-shot into the far corner - his 3rd goal against Valour this season!

Sander replaced the solid Barnham for the last 20 minutes as Valour continued to press for a leveller.

They thought they had it too, but Ednie's header was ruled out for offside and Prime could breathe again.

Barker and Joe Walker managed to hold the ball up well in the closing minutes, and Prime clung on to complete a satisfying double over their old rivals.
