Ashton Prime 2-3 Woodlands Reserves

Saturday 14th August 2010, Cadogan Recreation Ground

The Numbers got their 2010/11 campaign up and running with a friendly against old rivals Woodlands Reserves at the Cadogan - Prime's new home for the new season.

Prime fielded new signing Pete Henshall, but were without Carl Barker who pulled out at the last minute due to work commitments.

The game kicked off in heavy rain with Prime resplendant in their new purple kit.

Woodlands knocked the ball around well and the home side were struggling to adjust to playing 4-3-3 and were clearly missing Mazurkiewicz's pace at the back and the striking power of Excell, Skovborg-Hansen and Barker.

Woodlands opened the scoring after 15 minutes when a good cross from the right-wing left Goldsmith at full-stretch trying to head clear, but the ball skimmed off his head and nestled in the far corner, leaving 'keeper Kerton helpless.

Abu and the Walker brothers were trying to get a grip of the midfield, but the game was still being controlled by Woodlands' experienced playmaker Paul Brazil and it was not long before they doubled their lead.

Henshall did well to halt a run by their left-winger, but had to concede a corner. The set-piece was curled in and their unmarked striker flashed a header in towards goal and despite Barnham making a fine goal-line clearance, the rebound was smashed in from close range - via a deflection.

On the half-hour mark, Prime rang the changes with Garside, Goulding, Flamank and Lower entering the fray - but still the visitors were bossing the game and it was no more than they deserved when their striker coolly lobbed the advancing Kerton after another swift break.

Goldsmith was pleased to hear the half-time whistle and to remind his team that they needed to stay patient and start playing their football - despite the challenging conditions.

The second-half started in a much more even manner - although chances for both sides were at a premium. Garside and Gilbert had shored up the defence and Goulding and Flamank were halting the runs of their respective wingers.

On the hour mark more changes were made with Henshall and Sander pushed on down the flanks with Goldsmith moving into the midfield and Barnham returning at left-back.

Prime were starting to play some football - a lot of it coming through the ever-impressive Joe Walker and new-boy Henshall down the left.

The home side pulled one back after Goldsmith robbed Brazil deep in Woodlands territory - the ball fell to Joe Walker who cut inside his man and after being felled by a desperate tackle, referee Sankey pointed to the spot.

Walker dusted himself down and slotted home the penalty to the keeper's left.

Kneebone and Walters both returned for the last 15 minutes and Prime's tails were now up. They pulled a second goal back after a fine move involving Goldsmith, Walker and Henshall down the left wing. Henshall beat his man on the by-line and his cut-back was scuffed into the empty net by Walker.

Prime battled to force a late equaliser, but time ran out on them.

All in all, an encouraging performance by the Numbers and the result was largely irrelevant. The resilience shown in the second period will give heart to all of the squad as they push on to face Tw99 next Sunday.
