Ashton Prime 0-2 TW99

Sunday 22nd August 2010, Cadogan Recreation Ground

Prime headed into their 2nd game of pre-season with the visit of Sunday League side TW99 - managed by ex-Prime player Stuart Hodges.

It was a rare Sunday afternoon match for Prime but the weather was just as bad as the previous Saturday.

With the Walker brothers both missing, Lower was drafted in to start in central-midfield alongside captain Abu. Strikers Excell and Carl Barker also returned and both started as Prime switched to a 4-4-2 formation.

It was a fairly even, if scrappy, opening as both sides tried to settle. But it was the visitors who took the lead on the 10 minute mark. A corner was curled in towards the near post and despite there being 3 purple shirts in close attendance, the TW99 striker was able to rifle home unchallenged from point-blank range.

Goldsmith soon joined the action in Central-Midfield, giving Lower a well-earned break after 15 minutes!

The Numbers were starting to play some football with full-backs Flamank and Henshall bringing the ball out and providing wingers Kneebone and Walters with plenty of the ball.

Abu was as competitve as ever and he and Goldsmith started to dictate the play in the midfield.

At the back Garside and Gilbert looked solid and when Gilbert was given a break after 25 minutes to get Sander on at right-back, Flamank continued to excel in the centre.

Goulding also replaced Henshall as Prime battled to find a leveller.

Following a series of corners, Prime were given a golden opportunity to level when the TW99 defender inexplicably handled when challenging with Goldsmith. Excell stepped up but the keeper made a good save low to his right.

Still Prime were on the front foot and they were denied by 3 goal-line clearances as an equaliser contiuned to elude them.

After a flowing move Goldsmith's slide rule through-ball found Barker, but the keeper made another excellent save.

Somehow Prime went in behind at the break and manager Goldsmith implored his players to keep playing the same way.

The first 15 minutes of the second period continued in much the same vain, but despite a barrage of long throws from Goldsmith, and some excellent crosses from Henshall - who had been moved up to right-wing, the goal would not come.

After 65 minutes there was another goal, but it went the way of the visitors.

Goldsmith got caught in possession in the centre-circle and TW99 broke away down the right and their striker finished expertly beyond Kerton's dive.

Prime then reverted to playing long aimless balls forward for the hapless strikers and TW99 started to dominate and Kerton and his back 4 were kept busy.

Sturmey made his first appearance of the season in the last 10 minutes but by then the game was lost and Prime were left to rue their missed chances.
