Ashton Prime 5-1 Brenchley Wanderers
Saturday 11th December 2010, Cadogan Recreation Ground
After temperatures finally rose above freezing, the snow melted and Prime returned to cup action after two consecutive postponements. Sadly, the game still did not start on time as for the second game running against Brenchley, the groundsman caused problems - at least he turned up this week - but 10 minutes after the scheduled 1pm kick-off time. This really is unacceptable as it meant that players and supporters alike wasted an hour of their time and manager Goldsmith will be seeking an explanation from the council who charge a king's ransom for the hire of the pitch every week! Anyway...rant over!
Prime restored Ellis and Polinski to the starting lineup, with Davis, Excell and Gilbert making up the bench.
In stark contrast to their normal openings to matches, Prime found themselves 2 goals up within 5 minutes and 3 up after 15 - with Scott Walters' inswinging corners wreaking havoc.
The first one curled straight in beyond the keeper's dive, then he curled one in to the near post and Joe Walker showed that he had not lost his golden goalscoring touch by neatly volleying home.
A third corner again found Brenchley's marking severely lacking and Walker nodded home his second.
It was a strange start to the game as although Prime deserved to be ahead - the margin definitely flattered them and Brenchley were certainly an improved side from when the team's met in November.
A rare slip by Parsons nearly let them in to pull one back, but their striker blazed wastefully over the bar when clean through on Kerton's goal.
But they did pull one back on the half-hour mark when Mazurkiewicz was adjudged to have fouled the Brenchley left-winger who took little persuasion to dive theatrically to the floor.
Referee Delves who gave at least as many mystifying decisions and correct ones was quick to point to the spot and although Kerton got a hand to Dan Matthews' penalty, the ball nestled in the net.
Prime were still dangerous and from a long Chapman throw from the left the ball bounced its way to Henshall who managed to head over from 3 yards with the goal gaping - a definite challenger to take the miss of the season award away from Sander who spurned a similar opportunity at Paddock Wood.
Abu also had a fine 30-yard free-kick tipped over the bar by the keeper.
After the break Brenchley pushed men forward, but the Prime back 4 held firm, despite Dave Ellis seemingly forgetting whose side he was on for 10 minutes or so - after an excellent first half from the left-back.
Chapman was being well marshalled by the Brenchley centre-backs and he was replaced by Excell with an hour gone.
Walker went agonisingly close to completing his hat-trick when the keeper fluffed a clearance and he curled an effort inches wide from distance with the goal at his mercy.
At the other end, captain Matt Walker was in commanding form and he and Parsons repelled all that Brenchley could throw at them.
Kerton did produce one outstanding save after a snap-shot from their right-winger, and minutes later Brenchley finally sprang the offside trap - but again Kerton was on hand to scramble the ball to safety.
Davis replaced Ellis and Gilbert came on as a holding midfield for Henshall as Prime sought to see out the remaining minutes.
Infact they did even better than that as Gilbert's flick on found Excell in space and although he scuffed his shot, it squirmed under the keeper and into the net for a crucial 4th goal.
With the visitors now punch-drunk, Joe Walker decided to go on a mazy run and then ignored the well-placed Walters to slot home yet another hat-trick - 21 goals now for the season!
The final whistle went moments later and Prime celebrated getting through to their first ever cup Semi-Final.
