Brenchley Wanderers 2-0 Ashton Prime

Saturday 26th February 2011, Brenchley Memorial Ground

Prime travelled to Brenchley looking to consolidate their lead at the top of the table and to seal their third win over Wanderers this season.

Gilbert and Mazurkiewicz were missing through injury and captain Matt Walker was an 11th hour withdrawal due to a back injury, but Parsons and Abu returned. Parsons started at centre-back with Goldsmith, and Ellis was rotated in to start at left-back with Davis rested to the bench alongside the Abu and Overy.

It was a minor miracle that the game was on after persistent rain throughout Friday night and Saturday morning - and the surface at the Memorial Ground had virtually no grass on it at the start of the game - let alone the end.

Brenchley won an important toss and kicked down the considerable slope in the first half and they proceeded to put Prime's back 4 under intense pressure.

Goldsmith and Parsons were both forced to make some vital last-ditch challenges and Ellis and Barnham had their hands full with Brenchley's speedy wingers.

Walters and Polinski were battling as hard as they could, but Prime were missing the aerial ability of captain Walker which allowed the visitor's central midfield to win the vast majority of headers.

Henshall looked dangerous down the left when he got the ball but he was guilty of over-playing and trying to take on one player too many. Sander playing on the right at the top of the hill was a largely anonymous figure with the ball simply never making it out to him.

Brenchley took the lead after 25 minutes when they broke down the right and with Parsons dragged across to the left-back area, Goldsmith was left with 2 to mark in the middle and after the cross was flicked on by their first striker, Goldsmith lost his footing whilst trying to change direction and it left the other striker with a simple finish.

Prime knew that they needed to stay in the game until the break but again the ridiculous conditions were to blame for Prime going 2 down. This time Brenchley got to the by-line but Goldsmith seemed to be well placed to slide the ball out for a corner - but again he lost his footing and the ball stopped in the mud right on the line and the Brenchley striker beat Kerton at his near post with a driven cross-shot.

Prime battled back up the other end and after good work by Henshall, Walters shot over the bar.

At the break, Abu was introduced with Sander replaced - allowing Henshall to switch wings and Walters to move out to the left.

The 2nd half was predictably played largely in the Brenchley half, but the home side still looked dangerous on the break.

Prime contined to exert pressure but with passing virtually impossible , it was a case of getting the ball into the box and trying to win flick-ons - not the ideal scenario with Brenchley's centre-backs heading clear most of the time with ease.

Prime's best chance came when Walker was put through, but the ball got stuck in the mud and he couldn't race clear to get a clean shot away.

Davis replaced Barnham at right back and shortly after Walters was the victim of a late tackle and had to come off, with Overy coming on up front and Excell switching to the left.

The change at least got Excell into the game as he was now playing on about the only part of the pitch with any grass left on it and he managed to beat several yellow shirts on his first surge down the left. He also curled an effort just wide from the edge of the box.

It just wasn't to be Prime's day as they continued to press and even hit the post with an effort from the edge of the box - but with the pitch increasingly heavy, Prime looked disheartened and the home side successfully ran down the clock to claim the points.

It means that Prime's game with Tonbridge Invicta III at Cadogan next week takes on an even greater importance, and the title race remains wide open.
