East Peckham Juniors Reserves 1-3 Ashton Prime
Saturday 19th March 2011, Pippin Road, East Peckham
After a sticky period of results, Prime's trip to East Peckham took on even greater importance.
The Numbers were without Barnham and Brabon from last week but the Walker brothers returned and Alex Bishop was available to make his first appearance of the season in central-midfield. Mazurkiewicz also returned to the bench.
The vast expanses on the Pippin Road pitch were in stark contrast to Prime's home at the Cadogan, so it was obvious that this would be a very different game to the clubs' meeting earlier in the season.
The home side got on top from the start, popping the ball around confidently and The Numbers looked like a side that was struggling for form.
East Peckham were particularly dangerous down the right-wing, with their passing movements resulting in several 2 on 1 situations which Ellis was struggling to deal with.
Fortunately for Prime, the pairing of Parsons and Matt Walker was looking rock-solid and their extra height meant that when crosses did come in, they were easily repelled.
Bishop and Abu started to come into the game and wingers Walters and Henshall also started to see more of the ball, but strikers Joe Walker and Excell were still largely starved of service.
Prime took the lead on the 20 minute mark - against the run of play. Walker drew a foul from the Juniors defender close to the corner flag on the right-wing.
Despite the manager's call for Walters to curl in an inswinging kick, Abu stepped up with his right-foot and his outwinger deceived the home keeper and found the head of Matt Walker who was roughly a foot taller than his marker and he made no mistake with his close-range header.
The East Peckham bench looked dejected after conceding a goal to Prime's first real foray forwards. Their mood did not improve 10 minutes later.
The increasingly influential Bishop picked up the ball just inside the Juniors half and he was allowed to stride forward with the ball and and as it sat up, he unleased a swerving piledriver from fully 30 yards which arced into the top corner - despite a valiant attempt by the home keeper.
Prime nearly let Juniors back into the game minutes later though. Parsons was penalised for a foul just outside the box and 'keeper Kerton called for a 4-man wall. Prime's players took an age to sort themselves out and with Kerton still screaming at his day-dreaming wall, the Juniors skipper curled a free-kick towards goal, but Kerton sprinted across his goal-line and pawed the ball over the ball, just when it seemed set to nestle in the top corner.
Both keeper and manager were apoplectic with the outfield players for nearly handing the home side a lifeline.
But Prime escaped and the defence continued to hold up well to the home team's pressure - with Davis putting in another polished performance at right-back - not allowing the left-winger a sniff and even finding time himself for a cavalier surge forward.
Things got even better for Prime when just before half-time Joe Walker's pace got him away from the Juniors defenders, but their last man tripped him as he got into the box - and a penalty was rightly awarded. With a penalty record about as successful as Sander's last fake tan, it was a relief when Excell handed the ball to Joe Walker to take the spot-kick.
It proved the right decision as he confidently despatched the kick into the bottom right-hand corner and the half-time whistle sounded immediately.
Prime were certainly flattered by the scoreline but they knew they could play a lot better in the second half and they could now play with a degree of freedom.
They started the second half well, although their progress was checked somewhat with an injury to Walters sustained in the first half that meant he had to be replaced by Sander - with Henshall eventually getting the message that he needed to switch wings.
Prime were now carving out the better chances, with Bishop and Walker both going close before Abu put in a late contender for embarrassing moment of the season when he air-kicked an attempted shot from the edge of the box after touching the ball with his standing foot!
Juniors nearly pulled one back when Parsons' inadvertant header was tipped over by the ever-alert Kerton, but on the hour mark he could do nothing as the Juniors midfielder let fly from a similar spot to Bishop's first-half attempt. The ball flew into the net and suddenly the home side were back in the game.
Soon after they hit the side netting after a deep cross to the back post, but that was as close as they came.
The Juniors manager made the mistake of heckling Ellis for an average first-half performance with a cry of "get at him, he's rubbish". Immediately Ellis responded by dribbling past 2 Juniors players before being cynically hacked down. "Did ok then, fatty" came the response. Brilliant!
Bishop and Abu were now controlling the midfield and Sander put in a committed performance down the right-wing - proving a constant thorn in the side of the Juniors left-back and indeed the keeper - who responded to Sander's fair challenge on him by grabbing the winger around the throat!
This was merely a sign of the home side's frustration and that did not improve when Mazurkiewicz replaced Davis at right-back for the last 20 minutes and he proceeded to carry on where Davis left off.
For Prime it was just a case of running down the clock and Goldsmith replaced the tiring Walker for the last 10 minutes as he and Excell ran the ball to the corners.
At the final whistle, Prime celebrated a much needed 3 points - and with Frant's shock win at Tonbridge Invicta III's, it sent The Numbers back to the top of the table.
