Ashton Prime 1-1 F.C. Revolution
Saturday 2nd April 2011, Hayesbrook School, Tonbridge
After a 15 minute interval, the two sides resumed with Prime making several changes. Sander and Davis started at full-back with Ellis joining Parsons at centre-back. Matt Walker was moved into midfield with Polinski and Abu was given a surprise start up front alongside Excell - at the expense of the the benched Joe Walker.
FC Revolution had also made several changes and the outcome was that Prime were now the dominant force. They threatened from several set-pieces before Excell let fly from 20 yards and beat the keeper all ends up - only to see the ball smack off the crossbar and away to safety.
Prime did take the lead through a slightly unlikely source. Henshall whipped in a corner from the right and despite the presence of Ellis and Walker, it was the vertically challenged Abu who rose like a salmon*** to head home at the near post.
Prime should have doubled their lead when Excell was clean through but he elected to try a back-heel to Abu when a shot seemed like the best option. He found himself through again 5 minutes later, but this time the keeper foiled him.
So it was 1-0 at the break and with weary limbs now taking their toll, Barnham replaced Davis and Joe Walker replaced Walters on the left - Walters having run himself into the ground on the energy-sapping surface.
Predictably Revolution brought on some of their bigger players and the game turned around with Prime now very much on the back foot.
The back 4 held up admirably though with Barnham keeping the dangerous right-winger quiet in easily his best performance of the season. Sander meanwhile was having a stormer down the right side and after a buccaneering run down the right-wing, his teasing cross was somehow headed over by Joe Walker.
Matt Walker's back gave up on him with 20 minutes to go, so Mazurkiewicz was sent on in an unfamiliar holding midfield role.
Parsons and Ellis continued to repel cross after cross and Kerton's handling was exemplary.
With all 3 subs used, Excell went down with a foot injury but had to hobble on - likewise both centre-backs were cramping up and Prime were literally just hanging on.
It seemed that they might cling on to the win when Kerton produced an excellent tip on to and over the crossbar with 2 minutes left, but from the resulting corner, and with Revolution even throwing their keeper forward, the ball fell to an unmarked player and he smashed the ball home.
Realistically the result ends any chances Prime have of the title, but the manager was pleased with the team's battling spirit in the second game after 2 hours of energy-sapping football on an unfamiliar surface in hot, humid conditions.
The aim for Prime now is to pick themselves up and win as many games as they can between now and the end of the season - promotion is still possible and there is still the chance of silverware in the Charity Cup.
*** - I think it actually just hit him in the face - but he asked me to write that!
