Staplehurst Monarchs 0-1 Ashton Prime
Saturday 7th May 2011, Jubilee Field, Staplehurst
Some 3 weeks after the previous league game, Prime made the long trip to Staplehurst to bring the curtain down on the club's best season to date.
Prime were without Goldsmith and Henshall - both injured during the cup semi-final loss to Rusthall. Ellis was also missing but Davis made a welcome return.
Paul Kneebone was all set to make his first appearance of the season, but his knee injury which has ruined his season flared up again after training in the week, so Sander filled the right-wing void with Goulding replacing Excell up front.
Adam Sankey was joined on the bench by Bishop.
The referee failed to show up, so thanks go to Staplehurst's Chairman Mike Hooker who took the whistle and did an excellent job - better than most of the normal refs in our league to be honest!
Prime started off in the ascendancy, with Joe Walker's runs creating havoc in the Staplehurst defence. He latched onto Walters' through-ball on 10 minutes and flashed the ball across the box, but Goulding agonisingly failed to reach the ball on the stretch at the far post to give Prime a deserved lead.
At the other end, Prime's back 4 was looking extremely solid with Parsons and Gilbert commanding in the air, Davis rock-solid as normal and Barnham enjoying his best game of the season.
Kerton did have to make a fine save midway through the half though to thrawt the Staplehurst midfielder.
Captain Matt Walker - on his final appearance before a year's hiatus to travel the world was controlling the midfield with the help of the energetic Abu and Walters was seeing plenty of the ball out on the left-wing.
In truth it was a chance of few chances, although Staplehurst ended the half by putting Prime under pressure from several corners.
At the break, Bishop replaced Goulding who was sporting a badly gashed knee sustained when trying to convert his early chance.
Bishop's extra pace was causing a few more alarm bells for the Monarchs' back-line and Sander was getting more into the game down the right.
Prime took the lead after Walker won a free-kick down the left - deep into Monarchs' territory. Walters stepped up and delivered a dangerous outswinging cross which was eventually turned home by Matt Walker - a fitting send off for the skipper - even if he didn't necessarily know too much about it!
Staplehurst sent a 3rd striker on and went more direct, but Prime's back four was in top form and they repelled their attacks very well.
The closest they came to a leveller was from corners. Firstly Walters had to hack off the line and minutes later, their onrushing striker thumped a header against the post - but to Prime's relief the ball rebounded to safety.
Sankey replaced Sander for the last 15 minutes to make his debut for the season and he helped Prime to run down the clock and earn a good 3 points which secures 4th spot in the table.
A positive way to end a good season that promised so much more, but The Numbers will be back next season looking to build on the progress they have made.
