Ashton Prime 0-3 Staplehurst Monarchs

Saturday 25th September 2010, Cadogan Recreation Ground

On the back of last week's sloppy performance at Valour, Prime entertained new-boys Staplehurst Monarchs at Cadogan on a sunny September afternoon.

Prime were missing Mazurkiewicz, Flamank and Barker from their last outing, but they welcomed back Williams at Centre-Back - making his competitive debut for the club before he returns to University.

Walters and Sander also returned to the starting XI, with Goldsmith resisting the temptation to recall himself. He was joined on the bench by Postlethwaite, Sturmey and the late-arriving Goulding.

Prime again started well, with Williams and Gilbert looking commanding in the air at the back and Sander and Davis both putting in committed tackles.

The midfield 4 were all working hard, but they were struggling to get much space on the tight Cadogan pitch. Up front Excell and Joe Walker were linking up well, with Excell in particular looking sharp.

Chances were at a premium, but Staplehurst had a couple of half-chances from corners and set-pieces, but Prime held firm. At the other end Joe walker fired a couple of shots in from the edge of the box, but Prime's best chance came just before the break.

Good work by Excell down the right resulted in Prime winning a corner. Walters and Henshall worked a short corner and Walters dangerous inswinging delivery was glanced just wide by Matt Walker.

At the break, Goldsmith emphasised that patience was the key. Everyone was putting in a much more committed performancem but the first goal was likely to be crucial.

Prime had a glorious chance to take the lead after Excell's flick released Joe Walker in the inside left channel. He outstripped the Staplehurst left-back but could not get the ball out from under his feet at the crucial moment and he pushed his shot wide.

Minutes later, Henshall's twinkle toes got him past his marker down the right and his dangerous cut-back eluded both Excell and Walker in the middle.

On the hour mark, Goldsmith replaced skipper Matt Walker, but minutes later Staplehurst took the lead. Prime conceded a free-kick 25 yards out. The shot came in over the wall and Kerton could only palm the ball into the path of the on-rushing midfielder who tapped home.

It was another cruel blow for Kerton who had made some crucial saves and punches during the game.

Prime fell further behind when there was a quickly taken free-kick and their striker got to the ball before Kerton and although he got a large chunk on the ball, it trickled in before Williams could hook clear.

A third goal soon followed as Prime completed their capitulation.

Goulding and Postlethwaite both joined the action for the closing stages and they were both there to witness Abu getting booked for arguing with the ref and then receiving a second yellow as he continued his protest.

A disappointing end to a match that Prime deserved at least a draw out of. They must push on from here and bounce back at their old stomping ground Bayham next week against Hawkenbury.
