Ashton Prime 4-1 East Peckham Juniors Reserves

Saturday 9th October 2010, Cadogan Recreation Ground

On the back of last week's excellent win at Hawkenbury, Prime went into their home clash with struggling East Peckham Juniors Reserves in confident mood.

The Numbers were short on strikers though - with Carl Barker joined on the sidelines by Excell and last-week's hero Skovborg-Hansen.

Joe Walker was moved up front from his right-wing position, and he was joined by Goldsmith - making a first competitive start of the season.

Ellis made his first start of the season at left-back, allowing Davis to switch to his favoured right-back berth, with Sander moved into a more advanced right-wing position.

The visitors started the game well, playing a style of football that belied their lowly league position - but the Prime back four looked watertight, with Gilbert and Mazurkiewicz dominant in the air.

Prime started to find their feet and they were having some joy down the right wing, with Sander's pace a constant threat - all that was lacking was the final ball.

Abu and Matt Walker were starting to control midfield, and Goldsmith's aerial presence was keeping the Juniors' back 4 busy and Joe Walker clearly had the beating of the centre-backs in a foot-race.

It remained a game of few chances until on the half-hour mark, the Juniors' centre-back needlessly pushed Abu on the edge of the box - conceding a soft free-kick.

Abu stepped up and he made the most of a poorly set wall to smash home low and hard into the corner of the net for his 2nd goal in 2 games.

Prime were visibly lifted by the goal and they forced a barrage of long throws and corners, and they doubled their lead on 40 minutes when Abu drilled in a corner and Goldsmith lost his marker and thundered home a header.

At the break, Prime knew that the next goal would be crucial and they were determined to make sure that they would get it.

It was a disjointed start to the half with East Peckham pushing men forward but Ellis and Davis repelling each of their wingers and Gilbert and Mazurkiewicz snuffing out their strikers.

Prime did get the vital 3rd goal though when a long-ball released Joe Walker who outpaced his markers and coolly slotted home.

Goldsmith immediately withdrew himself from the action and brought on Walters, with Henshall moved up front.

East Peckham kept their heads up admirably and they kept trying to play football to their credit. They were denied a goal when Kerton produced a sublime save from point-blank range - managing to tip the ball onto the bar.

But the orange-shirted visitors were not to be denied and they pulled a deserved goal back after their striker squared from the right hand side and the on-rushing midfielder slotted home into an unguarded net.

They forced several corners but Kerton was in commanding form, making several crucial punches and catches.

Garside replaced cramp-stricken Sander for the last 15 minutes in an unfamiliar right-wing position.

The change did the trick as the lively Walters curled in one of his trademark corners from the right and Joe Walker leapt to glance home a near-post header - his 4th of the season.

Sturmey joined the action for the last 5 minutes, making his first appearance of the season, as The Numbers successfully ran down the clock and took a deserved - if slightly flattering - win.
