RKP United Reserves 1-3 Ashton Prime

Saturday 16th October 2010, Ditton Community Centre

On the back of 2 consecutive league wins, Prime returned to cup action against unfamiliar opposition in Maidstone League outfit RKP United Reserves.

The Numbers' squad was boosted by the return of Excell, Barker and Barnham - but all had to be content with a place on the bench alongside the player/manager Goldsmith - who rested himself after his goalscoring exploits of the previous week.

Prime started the game well heading down the slope on the large Ditton pitch, and they should have been ahead within 2 minutes as Joe Walker burst down the right and his cross picked out his strike-partner Henshall who was denied by an excellent save by the home keeper from point-blank range.

But it was not long before the visitors' dominance was turned into a goal. Sander did well to win a free-kick down the right. Walters came over and delivered a superb inswinging cross which was stroked home by Joe Walker.

The home side were struggling to get into the game and every time they did get forward, Ellis and Davis were both dealing with their respective wingers comfortably and the Gilbert/Mazurkiewicz combination at Centre-Back continued to look formidable, leaving the RKP strikers feeding on scraps.

Sander had started the game in excellent fashion and it was obvious that he had the beating of his marker for pace. Davis and midfielders Matt Walker and Abu were looking to release him at every opportunity and he drew a cynical foul from the RKP left-back, which resulted in a booking.

Prime made it 2-0 on the half-hour mark when skipper Walker released his brother with a clever reverse ball and the younger brother turned inside a flat-footed challenge and beat the keeper to double his tally for the game.

Prime were playing with a relaxed confidence and things nearly got even better when Sander marauded down the right-wing yet again. He picked the ball up well inside his half and sprinted past the left-winger and then the left-back. He rounded the keeper, but the angle was against him and he narrowly failed to squeeze the ball in at the near post to claim a deserved goal.

As if stunned by what they had just witnessed, Prime suddenly started to lose their control of the game and RKP started to threaten for the last 15 minutes of the half, with Kerton forced into one memorable flying save to tip a ball out for a corner.

Importantly despite their slackness, Prime did not concede and they went into the break 2 goals to the good.

Barker replaced Davis at the break, but the message was to carry on passing the ball and more goals were there for the taking.

Henshall had a glorious opportunity to get his first competitive goal for The Numbers, but after latching onto a long through-ball and out-stripping the home side's defence, he sliced his shot high and wide.

Sander was struggling with an ankle knock, so his afternoon's work was done on the hour mark, with Excell coming on to replace him.

He went straight up-front and he played a good through-ball up to Walker who completed his hat-trick in emphatic fashion - again smashing home comfortably against the hapless home keeper.

Abu nearly made it 4 when his curling 30-yarder glanced against the angle of post and bar.

Goldsmith replaced the goal-scoring hero Walker with 15 minutes to go.

Matt Walker was penalised for a foul on the edge of the box soon after and Kerton was left to pick the ball out of the net as their midfielder curled the ball around the wall.

It resulted in a frantic last 10 minutes, but in truth Prime were comfortable and if they had taken their chances, they should have won by a much bigger margin.
