Ashton Prime 10-1 Roselands Reserves

Saturday 30th October 2010, Cadogan Recreation Ground

Prime went into their home game with old rivals Roselands Reserves looking for their fifth win on the spin - but their hopes looked to have been dented by a lengthy list of absentees.

Kerton, Gilbert, Matt Walker and Carl Barker were all missing from last week's win over Paddock Wood Reserves, so Lower took the gloves, Goldsmith returned as skipper alongside full-debutant Parsons and Polinski also made his first Prime start.

The visitors started well but the centre-back pairing looked commanding and there was no early danger to Lower's goal.

Prime took the lead after just 5 minutes as Joe Walker was afforded time and space in the box to slot home.

The Numbers doubled their lead when after a flowing passing move, Henshall's right-wing centre found the onrushing Abu who calmly volleyed home.

It was soon 3-0 when Walters' cross-shot was turned home by Walker despite a suspicion of offside.

Roselands were struggling to string any passes together and their long balls forward were being easily dealt with by a solid-looking Prime back 4 - with Davis and Sander both looking comfortable against their respective wingers.

Prime made it 4 when Excell's slide-rule pass released Walker, who was given the freedom of the Cadogan pitch to run through and slot home his hat-trick goal.

The rampant home side still were not finished there - as Walker incredibly turned home his 4th goal of the half.

The only blemish on a superb first half showing was the curious booking of Abu who simply questioned referee Delves' decision - not the only mystifying decision made by the ref today.

At the break, the message was simple - keep playing as we were - everyone was playing well and there were more goals there for the taking.

At the start of the second half Prime players were arguably guilty of trying to all get their name on the scoresheet - leaving gaps at the back and Goldsmith and Parsons were both at full stretch to keep the visitors out.

But Prime added their 6th goal when Polinski cut a swathe through the hapless Roselands backline and his finish beat the keeper at his near post. A deserved goal for the midfielder on his full debut.

Prime scored again almost directly from the resumption as Walker smashed home again from close-range.

Despite his obvious goal threat, Walker was still able to find time and space to net his 6th goal moments later - and his reward was to be immediately substituted and replaced by Postlethwaite.

Walker's strike partner Excell had put in a polished performance - clearly boosted by ending his goal drought last week - and after laying on 4 assists, he got his name on the scoresheet after being put clean through and making no mistake.

Prime were determined to keep a deserved clean-sheet but they were denied this when the Roselands midfielder struck a speculative shot from 25 yards which skimmed off the turf and nestled in the corner of the net, leaving Scott "the cat" Lower rooted to the spot.

But there was still time for Excell to add a second goal. Walters' corner was flicked on and Excell smashed home the volley .

He was denied a hat-trick by a late decision to punish a dubious handball when the score was still 9-0 - but in the grand scheme of things, it really did not matter.

Goldsmith described the performance as the best he has ever seen Prime play and those players missing today may be in for a wait to get back into the starting lineup.

The mood of the dressing room afterwards was tempered by the news that striker and current all-time leading scorer Carl Barker has been forced to follow his brother Jamie into retirement following an injury-plagued season. The club would like to wish Carl well and look forward to seeing him at training and at our social do's.
