Ashton Prime 1-0 West Farleigh
Saturday 27th August 2011, Bayham Recreation Ground, Tunbridge Wells
Having friendlies on the Bank Holiday weekend is always problematic, but this year it was verging on ridiculous as there were more Prime players unavailable than those that could make the match. As a result, Paul Sander roped in his brother Jim and midfielder Tom Hutton to bolster an under-strength Numbers lineup.
Ex-Prime winger Phil Chapman lined up for the visitors from the Maidstone Premier Division - eager to put one over his cousin - Prime 'keeper Lewis Kerton.
Prime boss Goldsmith left himself on the bench to start with, allowing Scotty "Javelin-thrower" Lower to roam around up front with the versatile Flamank.
Prime began confidently with Henshall and Walker both getting some good early touches and after 10 minutes Prime took a surprise lead when the ball fell to Hutton 25 yards out and he lashed the ball into the net with the 'keeper helpless.
The visitors immediately tried to hit back, but Jim Sander was marshalling the back 4 impressively and his partner in the heart of the defence Gray won virtually every tackle and even showed off some silky skills in bringing the ball out from the back. Barnham was keeping the right-winger quiet, whilst Chapman was getting no change at all out of the rock-solid Alun Williams at right-back.
Farleigh were popping the ball around well, but Prime were well organised and many attacks fizzled out when the final ball was overhit or misplaced, allowing Kerton to gather gratefully.
Matt Walker, captain for the day in probably his final appearance before he goes travelling was showing just how much Prime will miss him in the middle of the park, but Henshall - his partner in the midfield for the day was everywhere - showing brighter signs for the upcoming league season.
Goal-scorer Hutton was a constant threat with his pace down the left and now full of confidence, he tried his luck from range a couple more times in the opening half an hour.
After 20 minutes, "The Javelin" took a well-earned break allowing Goldsmith to join the fray - and the player/manager should have doubled Prime's lead moments later. Paul Sander led a break down the right-wing and he dug out a hanging cross to the back post which eluded Goldsmith's marker - but his header was tipped over the bar by the keeper.
Goldsmith was keen to make amends for this and after winning a free-kick some 30 yards out, he waved away Henshall and Flamank and strode up to strike the ball...about 30 yards over the bar!
The remainder of the half was played out without any real chances for either side and Prime went in delighted with their performance.
The second half commenced with Barnham now taking a break and Flamank trying out his 3rd position of the day at left-back.
In truth it was one-way traffic but Prime's back 4 was growing in stature and every time they were stretched, Kerton was there to claim or make a save.
Prime's only real outlet was the energetic Hutton who continued to test the West Farleigh right-back with his pace and persistance. Strikers Goldsmith and Lower spent most of the half tackling back and helping the midfield - and with 25 minutes left, Lower again requested a rest - the suspicion was that he just needed to check if his 6-1 shot came in at Sandown...it didn't!
Barnham came back on and he had clearly benefited from his break - winning a couple of 50/50s and then powering a clearing header half the length of the field!
Kerton made a couple more smart saves as West Farleigh pushed for a late equaliser - but despite 4 frantic minutes of stoppage time, the purples held on to claim an excellent win.
Kerton claimed the MoM award but in truth it could have gone to anyone today for a satisfying battling performance - roll on Woodlands Reserves next week!
