Ashton Prime 2-3 Woodlands Reserves

Saturday 3rd September 2011, Bayham Recreation Ground, Tunbridge Wells

Prime concluded their pre-season preparations with a game against league rivals Woodlands Reserves. Thankfully Prime were back up to something approaching full strengh - with a squad of 15 at Goldsmith's disposal.

Cary replaced Jim Sander at the back and Abu was back to take the captain's armband from the departing Matt Walker. Rich Davis filled an unfamiliar left-wing role, with key striker Carl Barker returning and playing alongside Mazurkiewicz to begin with. Gilbert, Postlethwaite and Overy all joined Goldsmith on the bench.

Prime started as if they had never played football before in their lives! Predictably, Woodlands took an early lead as a result. Their striker beat Kerton to a long ball forward and despite Williams' brave efforts to hook the ball clear, their striker put just enough pace on his finish.

The back 4 - rock-solid in last week's win against West Farleigh were all over the place and to be honest Woodlands should have increased their lead.

Out of nothing though, Prime levelled when Barker took advantage of a poor back-header by Woodlands' centre-back to coolly finish beyond their rotund keeper.

Some of Prime's players were now waking up - but others were still out of sorts and Goldsmith made changes - bringing on Gilbert and Postlethwaite midway through the half for Cary and Davis.

Woodlands re-took the lead 15 minutes before the break when they attacked down the right-hand side and the cross was turned in by their striker - leaving Kerton helpless.

Goldsmith himself entered the fray soon after - taking over from Mazurkiewicz up front - and immediately he had a golden chance to level. This time, Barker broke down the right and lifted a deep cross to the player/boss who had peeled off his marker. Goldsmith planted his header towards the top corner, but the keeper tipped it over.

At the break, Sander departed with Rich Davis replacing him on the right of midfield. Cary also returned to replace Gray.

The players were warned that they needed to switch on from the first whistle and start getting their attacking game going...within a minute they were 3-1 down!

Woodlands attacked down the right and a low cross was turned in at the far post after their midfielder slipped away from the usual tight-marking of Williams.

Henshall and Abu who were outplayed in the first half were starting to get their teeth into the game and as a result, Prime looked much more dangerous.

The Numbers were right back in it when Goldsmith's flick found Barker who turned inside his marker and beat the keeper at his near post.

Overy came on to add his pace down the left and Mazurkiewicz replaced Postlethwaite and went over to right-back - pushing the energetic Williams forward.

Prime's back 4 held up much better in the second period with Cary and Barnham looking solid and with options going forward, it was the home team in the ascendancy.

Williams was inches away from poking home a leveller but after he slid in and beat the keeper to the ball, the Woodlands centre-back rushed back to hook off the line.

Henshall then was denied by a good block and then Abu was inches away from latching onto Goldsmith's disguised chip through.

Time ran out on Prime but all in all the second half performance was a marked improvement and it was another good workout for the squad as the season approaches.

Annoyingly Prime have no match next week, but their season starts in earnest on the 17th September with the visit of Rusthall Reserves in the League Cup at Cadogan.
