Swan (Edenbridge) Reserves 1-0 Ashton Prime

Saturday 26th November 2011, Edenbridge Recreation Ground

Prime headed to the league-leaders in confident mood after 5-straight wins had seen them climb to 3rd in the table. It was an unchanged starting XI with Gray and Barnham returning to the bench at the expense of Postlethwaite.

Prime nearly took the lead in the first minute when the prolific Carl Barker lobbed a left-footed effort just wide.

Barker and Overy's movement was causing problems for the Swan's back four but Prime could not force any clear-cut chances.

Prime continued to be in the ascendancy in the first quarter, but gradually the young home side started to get their passing game going and Prime's much-improved backline had to be at their best to keep the scores level.

Gilbert and Davis both defended well at full-back with their respective wingers Coleman and Flamank both putting in excellent shifts up and down the flanks both defensively and going forward.

Ellis and Cary's impressive form at centre-half continued - limiting the home side to long distance strikes and a spate of corners which were repelled well.

In midfield Henshall and Abu were involved in a very good battle with the home side's midfield duo, but after the interval they started to gain the upper hand and The Numbers again looked the more likely scorers.

Barker went close with a couple of snap-shots before Overy and Abu linked up well and Abu's effort was well saved by the keeper. Ellis also saw a header from a corner cleared off the line.

Sander came on for the hard-working Overy mid-way through the second period and he immediately got himself into a dangerous position from Coleman's right-wing centre, but he only succeeded in heading away from goal when well-placed.

But with 20 minutes left it was the home side that made the breakthrough after Abu was robbed of possession deep inside his own half. The ball was played across the box and Ellis narrowly failed to intercept, leaving the Swan striker with the simple task of tapping home from close-range.

Prime sent on Goldsmith for the tiring Coleman in response and they battered away at the Swan goal for the remainder of the game but the closest they came was Goldsmith's header wide from Abu's corner as the home side held out for the win.

The result was hard on Prime who deserved at least a point and they have definitely played worse this season and won.
