Brenchley Wanderers 0-3 Ashton Prime
Saturday 21st January 2012, Brenchley Memorial Ground, Brenchley
Prime made the trip to Brenchley's perenial mud-bath trying to address a poor history on the ground. The Numbers were without wingers Flamank and Sander but Goldsmith returned to the starting XI up front and Henshall returned in central midfield. Chapman and Coleman made the switch to the flanks.
It has been a busy January at Cadogan and ex-Woodlands striker Pete Ferguson was the latest to join Prime and he contented himself with a place on the bench alongside Gilbert and Mazurkiewicz.
Captain Abu won the toss and Prime kicked down the considerable slope in the first half with the wind at their backs.
It was one-way traffic from the off with wingers Coleman and Chapman seeing plenty of the ball and Goldsmith and Barker linking up well up front.
Prime thought they had the lead on 10 minutes when Henshall's 20-yarder cannoned back off the crossbar with the keeper beaten all ends up. The chances kept coming with Barker denied twice by the keeper and Chapman having an effort scrambled off the line.
Midway through the half it was somehow still goalless and Brenchley had a real chance when Barnham slipped but their striker lifted high over the bar.
Prime made the breakthrough on the half hour mark. Goldsmith won a free-kick 30 yards out and with the wind at his back, Abu thundered a free-kick into the top corner despite the excellent keeper getting a hand to it.
The chances kept coming with Cary planting a couple of headers just wide from Chapman's deliveries and yet another goal-line clearance but crucially Prime doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time.
Chapman curled in another teasing corner and with the defenders attracted to Goldsmith and Cary, Coleman nipped in at the near post to glance a superb header into the net.
The Numbers knew that the second half would be a different story with the wind, if anything, getting stronger. Goldsmith withdrew himself to hand Pete Ferguson his debut - hoping that his added pace could help catch Brenchley on the counter-attack.
The game was now being played very much in Prime territory but The Numbers defence marshalled by Ellis again held up well with Davis looking comfortable down the left and Barnham showing a surprising turn of speed to get himself out of trouble against the Brenchley left-winger. Cary mopped up anything that came his way and won several crucial defensive headers as the home side bombarded the Prime box with corners and throw-ins.
With the wind howling, Kerton was forced into action from a string of corners - but his punching and catching was impeccable.
After weathering the storm for 20 minutes, Prime started to push down the field with Chapman, Abu and Henshall intrumental. Gilbert replaced Barnham for the last 25 minutes and his first involvement was to win a strong 50/50 that left the Brenchley midfielder dazed!
Chapman and new-boy Ferguson linked up well in the box and as the ball reared up, the ref gave a penalty for handball by the defender. Carl Barker picked up the ball and having been denied on several occasions by the keeper he atoned by nearly breaking the net as he lashed the ball in just below the crossbar! 3-0 - game over.
Mazurkiewicz came on for the lively Coleman to see out the last period and Prime could have added more goals but Ferguson, Barker and Henshall were all denied by the keeper who was probably the best player on the pitch and kept the score down well.
It was a well-earned 3 points with all 14 players contributing. Another big effort is needed next week as Prime host bogey-side Woodlands Reserves but if The Numbers play with this much commitment then Ferguson could well have a happy return against his old club.
