Hawkenbury III 0-6 Ashton Prime
Saturday 25th February 2012, Bayham Recreation Ground, Tunbridge Wells
The Numbers looked to bounce back from last week's disappointing performance against Rusthall by returning to winning ways at their old stomping ground for the visit to Hawkenbury III.
Changes were made to the starting XI - with Flamank absent, Mazurkiewicz switched to left-back with Henshall, in turn, replacing him in central-midfield. Sander was another absentee so Overy swtiched to right-wing with Goldsmith joining Ferguson up-front. The bench consisted of Coleman, Barnham, Goulding and top-scorer Barker.
Prime kicked up the Bayham slope but dominated in the opening stages and went ahead when Ferguson's shot from just inside the box deflected off the back of Goldsmith and into the net.
The visitors were unrecognisable from last week's outing and Goldsmith nearly doubled the lead when the Hawks only half-cleared a corner and he rose highest to nod a header just wide.
Overy was producing a much-improved performance in an unfamiliar right-wing role and Chapman continued his excellent form down the left. The real difference though was the restoration of the Henshall/Abu partnership in the heart of the pitch. The two dominated - despite Hawkenbury's 4-5-1 system.
Prime's failure to get a 2nd goal gave the home side hope and they fashioned a couple of half-chances mainly as a result of their striker Alex Cole who looked dangerous at times, but Ellis and Cary kept a tight reign on him throughout.
Mazurkiewicz settled in well at left-back and Gilbert returned to form with some assured touches and typical tough tackles down the right.
The Ferguson and Goldsmith partnership was showing signs of blossoming and after Ferguson held up the ball well on the edge of the box, Goldsmith latched onto his lay-off to test the keeper with a 20-yarder.
It was a moment of class from birthday boy Abu on the half-hour mark that led to Prime's 2nd. The captain marked his 30th birthday the day before, by beating 2 Hawks midfielders and then threading a sublime throughball for Ferguson to latch on to and calmly slot home his first goal for the club.
Prime made it 3-0 5 minutes later. Gilbert's throw in found Goldsmith in the box and he held the ball up before rolling his man and luring the defender into a lunge that resulted in a penalty being awarded.
Chapman took responsibility and despite not hitting the ball as cleanly as normal, there was enough power on it to beat the home keeper.
Chapman and Goldsmith linked up again just before the break when Chapman's bullet throw-in was glanced in at the near post by the gaffer - giving the keeper no chance.
At the break, Goldsmith decided to rest himself and bring on Barker for the 2nd half - thus giving the striker a chance to add to his earlier hat-trick against Hawkenbury at Cadogan.
Hawkenbury showed renewed vigour in the second-half but Prime's defence - excellently marshalled by the impressive Ellis dealt comfortably with all that they could throw at them - leaving Kerton a virtual spectator!
Overy was replaced by Coleman after picking up a knock to his troublesome ankle - but his 50 minutes did plenty to press his claims for a regular slot in the side.
The 20 minutes after the break were largely dis-jointed but Prime fashioned the odd chance but Barker and Ferguson could not find a way past the keeper. Chapman then tried his luck but his drive whistled just over the bar.
Barnham came on for Gilbert for the last half an hour and he was guilty of a foul throw - much to the manager's disgust!
Prime finally added to the scoreline on 75 minutes when Chapman was scythed down in the box and the ref had no choice but to award another spot-kick. With the game already won, Prime 'keeper Kerton stepped up and smashed the perfect penalty into the top-right hand corner - not bad considering it may well have been his first touch of the half!
With 10 minutes left the rout was completed when Barker's persistence won the ball for Ferguson to drill home his 2nd and Prime's 6th goal.
The Numbers can now look forward to the remaining 5 games of the season which will take place over the next 3 weekends due to 2 double-headers being scheduled in mid-March.
