Ashton Prime 1-1 East Peckham Juniors Reserves

Saturday 10th March 2012, Cadogan Recreation Ground, Tunbridge Wells

With still 8 weekends to go in the season, Prime went into the first of two double-header weekends that will conclude their season by the middle of March.

East Peckham were the visitors to Cadogan for two back-to-back matches of 30 minutes each way.

Prime started match 1 with Davis returning at left-back, Chapman to left-midfield and Goldsmith replacing the absent Barker up front. The Numbers boasted a strong bench with Sander and Flamank joined by the returning Walters, Bishop and Skovborg-Hansen.

Prime got the game underway and with Goldsmith winning a series of early headers, the tone for the afternoon had been set, and shortly after the 10 minute mark, the home side took a deserved lead when Chapman teed himself up on the edge of the box and smashed a curling volley into the net - despite the keeper getting a hand to it.

Chapman's long throws were causing problems too and from his throw on the right-wing, Goldsmith got the faintest of touches with his head and the ball bounced up into the net - only for referee Delves to rule the goal out with the assistance of the East Peckham linesman who clearly thought that nobody had touched the ball before it found the net - should've gone to Specsavers!

Prime nearly doubled their lead when Overy found space on the right corner of the area and he fired his shot narrowly over the angle.

At the other end, arguably Prime's first-choice back 4 were performing well but Juniors were looking dangerous on the break and at times some last-ditch tackles were required to keep the lead intact.

It was 1-0 at half-time but Prime were given a let-off after the resumption when East Peckham's striker shook the crossbar with a well-hit shot that had Kerton beaten all ends up.

Flamank replaced Barnham in a bid to quell the influence of Juniors' pacey left-winger - but minutes after that the visitors were awarded a penalty when Ellis was adjudged to have fouled his man in the box - the defender clearly thought that the striker should be awarded a 6.0 for the dive - although there was definite contact.

Juniors' captain stepped up and smashed his penalty towards the roof of the net, but Kerton stuck up a strong left arm and palmed the ball over the bar superbly.

Skovborg-Hansen and Bishop replaced Goldsmith and Overy for the last 15 minutes and Prime could have wrapped things up when Henshall danced through several tackled before firing just wide.

Soon after Skovborg-Hansen escaped down the right and his excellent ball across the face of the goal was just too strong for his strike-partner Ferguson whose faint touch could not quite divert the ball into the far corner at full stretch.

Prime's were made to pay for their profligacy when in the last minute a deep cross to the back post left Davis challenging their striker in the air and with screams from the visitor's supporters on the touchline - Delves awarded another penalty.

This time Kerton could not rescue the home side - despite diving the right way and getting a hand onto a more tamely struck spot-kick.

The final whistle sounded as Prime kicked off. A frustrating end to a match the home side should have won.
