Ashton Prime 2-1 Frant

Saturday 17th March 2012, Cadogan Recreation Ground, Tunbridge Wells

And so it came to Prime's last match of the season and The Numbers were desperate to avenge the defeat in the first match. Davis, Flamank and Gray returned to the defence, with Overy, Walters (captain for his 30th birthday) and Fleming starting in midfield. Barker was retained up front alongside Chapman who had recovered from his shin injury.

Prime's squad rotation looked to be working well as Frant only rotated a few players and immediately Prime seemed quicker to the ball all over the pitch.

Chapman was finding plenty of space and his long throws were a constant danger to the visitors. Prime eventually took the lead on 10 minutes when Cary met an Abu corner and although his header was blocked on the line, he followed up to hook home his 6th goal of the season - not bad for a centre-back!

Prime should have doubled their lead when Overy challenged the keeper and the ball dropped for a stretching Barker - but he hooked the ball over the bar from inside the six-yard box. Worse was to follow as Walters was involved in a flowing move down the left which resulted in a ball across the face of goal. Purple shirts were queuing up to apply the finish - but Fleming contrived to hit the ball onto his standing foot from literally 1 yard out - and somehow the chance was gone!

At the other end, Gray was putting in a superb performance at the heart of the defence - typified by one perfectly timed sliding tackle inside the box, just as Frant's striker seemed certain to get a strike in on goal.

But Prime were made to pay for their missed chances when a long ball over the top released their pacey striker who outsripped Gray and Cary and nodded the ball over the stranded Kerton and into the net.

The goal was ridiculously against the run of play and somehow at the interval it was level.

Henshall's rested legs returned to the action for the second 30 minutes, with the hard-working Overy replaced and Fleming switching to the right.

The game continued in a similar pattern with Prime dominant. Henshall and Abu were now slicing through the Frant midfield and Chapman and Abu both tried their luck with free-kicks from distance.

Frant looked dangerous on the break but Davis' experience and Flamank's energy kept the wingers in check and Cary and Gray continued to impress. Kerton was called into action a couple of times but he showed his normal clean handling.

Prime threw on Ferguson for Barker in search of a winner and it came with 12 minutes on the clock as Chapman smashed home a 25-yarder which nearly took the keeper's hand into the net with it!

Frant forced a flurry of corners that caused some panic in the Prime defence, but with Mazurkiewicz on for Walters - Prime had plenty of defenders on the pitch to see the game through.

They nearly did more than that when Ferguson held the ball up well before releasing Chapman who got to the by-line and his driven cross was headed narrowly wide by Ferguson at the near post.

The final whistle was blown soon after and Prime celebrated an excellent end to an up and down season. Frant's title hopes had taken a severe blow and it looks increasingly as if Swan (Edenbridge) Reserves will now take the title.
