FC Revolution 3-4 Ashton Prime

Saturday 5th November 2011, Hayesbrook School, Tonbridge

Prime went in search of a third consecutive win against perenial bogey-side FC Revolution. Prime rejected the home side's request to play the game on their 3G astroturf, so the match took place on the neighbouring grass pitch.

Prime's chances were hit by the absence of top-scorer Carl Barker due to work commitments, so Goldsmith returned to the starting lineup, with Ellis filling in at centre-back for Gilbert in the only other change from last week's win. Flamank returned, but he had to make do with a spot on the bench alongside Overy and Postlethwaite.

FC Revolution kicked off and they made the early running with their attractive passing style causing Prime problems. There was a real problem for the visitors when the home side's diminuitive striker controlled a through-ball well and smashed in beyond Kerton to put Revolution ahead.

The goal seemed to wake Prime up and the visitors soon capitalised on some over-confidence from the home side whose plans to play the ball out from the back went badly wrong on several occasions with Goldsmith and Walker, plus wingers Walters and Coleman working hard to close down and win possession back high up the pitch.

Prime equalised on 20 minutes when Henshall was scythed down midway into the Revolution half. Abu's first delivery was cleared but he made up for it by curling in an inviting cross on the rebound for Goldsmith to nod home an equaliser over the advancing keeper.

Suddenly there were purple shirts everywhere and Revolution failed to learn their lessons. This time Goldsmith intercepted a feeble ball out by their centre-back and he rolled the ball across the face of goal for Joe Walker to tap home - sadly he skied his effort and Revolution appeared to be off the hook.

Not so - Walters' persistence won a corner and Abu's perfect delivery found Walker who redeemed himself with a flick header at the near post that flew into the net before the keeper could move.

The home side were getting no change out of Prime's back 4 with Ellis and Cary exceptional. Barnham ensured that his man never got past him (one way or another!) and Davis was keeping yet another winger 20 years his junior quiet!

Prime were first to everything with Henshall and Abu snapping into tackles and when Goldsmith went in strongly on the Revolution centre-back the home side appealed for him to be booked - obviously they aren't familiar with the tackles being allowed when they play on their 3G astro pitch!

It was 3-1 just before the break when Goldsmith's long throw in picked out Cary who had timed his run to perfection to thunder the ball into the roof of the net.

At the break, Prime were urged to remember last week's capitulation and they were focused on not allowing it to happen again.

They had a let-off when Ellis' made his only mistake of the day and failed to make a clearance - but fortunately the striker shot wastefully wide.

Moments later Barnham was lucky to escape a caution after putting in an agricultural tackle on Revolution's goal-scorer on the half-way line. Minutes afterwards, Flamank replaced Barnham in a bid to save him from entering the referee's notebook.

There was a flashpoint moments later when Revolution midfielder Josh McNabb put in a horrendous tackle on Coleman and was lucky to only get booked.

Prime nearly responded in the best way possible when Henshall's played the ball into Goldsmith's feet in the Revolution half - he held off two markers and fed the ball wide to the onrushing Coleman who took a touch and delivered a perfect ball to the back-post where Goldsmith had made up the yards, but the gaffer volleyed the ball over the bar.

The miss did not prove costly as minutes later it was 4-1. Joe Walker's back gave way, allowing Reece Overy to join Goldsmith up front. With his 2nd and 3rd touches, Overy out-paced the Revolution centre-backs, cut inside and fired an unstoppable shot into the corner of the net. Super-sub indeed!

The home side were despondent and there was a predictable clash with 20 minutes left as Goldsmith and McNabb went in for a 50/50. Goldsmith felt that the Revolution midfielder had jumped into the tackle two-footed and responded angrily. The ref booked Goldsmith for the reaction but amazingly McNabb escaped with little more than a ticking-off.

Goldsmith was replaced by Postlethwaite for the closing 15 minutes and Revolution were given a lifeline in the final 5 minutes when Coleman tripped their midfielder in the box and the ref pointed to the spot. McNabb stepped up and Kerton produced a superb save to the delight of Goldsmith in particular!

You would have thought that that would have been it, but not with Ashton Prime! Firstly Flamank failed to clear at the back post and Revolution pulled one back.

Next, almost from the kick-off Revolution won and converted a corner with 1 minute on the clock.

There were some frantic moments but Prime hung on for a deserved win - their 3rd in a row and first ever against their Tonbridge-based opponents.
