Ashton Prime 2-0 Brenchley Wanderers
Saturday 12th November 2011, Cadogan Recreation Ground, Tunbridge Wells
The Numbers welcomed Brenchley to the Cadogan in search of a fourth straight win. The goalscoring forward line of Goldsmith and Walker from last week's fine win at FC Revolution were both out injured with Walker's back ruling him out completely and Goldsmith's twisted knee meaning he was only fit enough for the bench. Barker and Overy formed a new-look forward line with Flamank coming in for Walters who has gone off travelling for 4 months on the left-wing.
It was a tight opening to the game with Brenchley perhaps edging the early stages. They had a half-chance on 10 minutes when their striker latched onto a flick on but lifted his shot wide of the target.
Overy looked particularly sharp up front in the early stages - winning a surprising number of headers and with Barker's help, not giving the Brenchley defenders any time on the ball.
Prime came more into the game as the half-progressed with Coleman again impressing down the right with a series of teasing crosses that Brenchley managed to head clear.
Abu and Henshall were first to most balls in the heart of the pitch and Flamank was putting in a typically energetic performance down the left-wing and after linking up well with Overy, he was unlucky to see his shot saved by the keeper.
At the back Ellis and Cary continued where they left off last week - restricting Brenchley to half-chances and when they did get a shot in, Kerton was there to save well.
A feature of Prime's play in the match was how well both full-backs distributed the ball - with Davis as assured as ever, but Barnham particularly impressing both on and off the ball.
The half ended in farcical circumstances after Prime won a corner. Abu indicated that the ball was flat so a replacement was thrown on - only for referree Delves to blow for half-time before the kick could be taken!
It was evident that the first goal would be crucial and Prime needed to make sure that they took any chances that came their way.
The football was much better at the start of the second period from both sides, but Prime were now on top with Henshall and Abu linking up well and Flamank coming more and more into the game as an attacking force.
Chances for both sides were still at a premium - so in a way Prime's goal took everyone slightly by surprise! Prime were awarded a free-kick just inside their own half. Ellis reluctantly stepped forward and lofted a deep delivery into the box. A yellow-shirted Brenchley player could only head sideways and Barker was there to volley home his 7th goal of a prolific season so far.
Prime were now able to sit and soak up Brenchley's attacks and hit them well on the break. Flamank was unlucky when his cross/shot from the left-wing drifted just wide and then Overy had a shot well saved by the keeper.
But it was the Ellis/Barker connection again that set the seal on the win - this time the centre-back's ball forward held up nicely for Barker to nod over the advancing keeper and into the net.
Gilbert came on for Overy for the last 15 minutes and with his first touch, he teed up Henshall to strike a trademark volley from the edge of the box which the keeper did well to tip over.
Goldsmith replaced the match-winner Barker for the last few minutes as Prime successfully ran down the clock and claimed a workmanlike 3 points - with Kerton and the back 4 deserving of their clean-sheet.
