Woodlands Reserves 1-3 Ashton Prime
Saturday 8th September 2012, Woodlands Walk, Tonbridge
The Numbers got their 2012/13 campaign up and running with a trip to Tonbridge on a scorching September afternoon.
Only 3 of Prime's 7 new signings made the squad with Dan Balcombe starting in goal and Tom Gibson and Ross Taylor playing down the wings.
Matt Walker and Tom Cary formed a new centre-back partnership with Sander and Davis selected at full-back. The new boys on the wings were joined in midfield by the Abu/Henshall partnership, with Barker up-front alongside Ferguson.
The game started very evenly with Woodlands trying to pass the ball around and build from the back, but Prime were working hard to close them down and force them into errors.
When Prime had the ball, the pace of Gibson and Taylor down the wings, plus Barker through the middle looked dangerous against the older legs of their markers.
Prime created the first real chance when Taylor cut inside from the left but dragged his shot wide with his weaker right foot.
Henshall and Abu were both in excellent form and through their play-making, Prime were gaining control of the game. It was Abu who picked the pass through to Ferguson after 20 minutes that led to Prime going in front. The striker was put clean through and he drew the keeper before calmly slotting the ball into the net - a sweet moment for the former Woodlands player.
The home side battled to get back into the game and won a flurry of corners - one of which was headed against the outside of the post by their midfielder.
But Prime's defence was looking very solid, with Walker and Cary winning everything in the air and Davis and Sander managing to keep their respective wingers under wraps.
As the half drew to a close, Prime were definitely in the ascendancy and they doubled their lead when Henshall robbed a Woodlands defender in the box and squared for Barker to slot home from roughly a yard!
Things got even better minutes later when Barker challenged the keeper for a bouncing ball and the ball deflected to Ferguson who had the simple task of rolling the ball into an empty net.
So at the break things were looking comfortable, but it was obvious that Woodlands would improve in the second half and Prime would have to defend resolutely.
Debutant keeper Balcombe who had little to do in the first half was now being tested, but he claimed several crosses and also produced an excellent reaction save after the Woodlands striker managed to hook an effort goalbound despite pressure from Walker.
Prime still looked dangerous on the break though and Sander's fine run and cross narrowly eluded Barker.
That was pretty much his last involvement as Buckland came on at right-back and shortly afterwards, Flamank replaced the ailing Taylor who had put in a really good shift down the left.
Flamank's energy was posing real problems for the Woodlands right-back and after beating him and cutting inside, his fierce drive was deflected over.
With 15 minutes left, Henshall succumbed to cramp. Goldsmith came on in central-midfield and immediately clattered into a Woodlands player as Prime aimed to hold on to what they had.
It was all hands to the pump with Woodlands pouring players forward but the defence held up well and Balcombe made a couple more vital saves.
The home side did get a consolation with a minute or so to play when a cross from the left was headed into the net, leaving Balcombe helpless.
The final whistle sounded soon after though and Prime had finally secured their first ever win over the Tonbridge outfit and had started the season in style.
