Ashton Prime 2-2 AFC Valour Reserves

Saturday 5th January 2013, Cadogan Recreation Ground, Tunbridge Wells

The Numbers kicked off 2013 by welcoming old rivals AFC Valour Reserves to Cadogan. The home side replaced the absent Mazurkiewicz with Buckland at right-back and new Dad Sander was replaced by Davis. In midfield Sykes came in for Nowak down the left-wing. Up-front Barker was back to replace Goldsmith, who was joined on the bench by Taylor.

The pitch was one of the few pitches to survive the damp conditions, but it was heavy and very muddy in places.

Prime kicked off and edged the opening exchanges with Barker and Ferguson prominent. Henshall looked lively down the right and defensively, Buckland and Davis made some good early challenges.

Chances were few and far between, but with Cary and Williams both rocks at the back, Prime looked solid and Balcome had very little to do. Sykes was coming into the game down the left and he certainly had the beating of the Valour right-back.

Prime took the lead mid-way through the half after a throw-in on the right picked Barker out on the corner of the box. There looked little danger but he shifted the ball out of his feet and curled in a drive with his supposedly weaker left foot.

The goal seemed to give Prime confidence and they really should have extended their lead before the break. Firstly Henshall slipped past his man and got to the by-line before cutting the ball back for Westcott who mis-kicked and the chance went begging.

There was an even better chance just before half-time after Barker beat 2 men down the right and rolled the ball across for Ferguson who dallied on the ball and his eventual shot was blocked by the defenders.

Nonetheless, at the break Prime were happy as they were dominant and had seen little from the visitors to suggest much of a goal-threat.

Valour predictably came out sharper in the second 45, but Balcombe's handling was reliable and Prime's defence continued to repel all Valour attacks.

Westcott and Abu continued to dominate the midfield and the former had another effort from the edge of the box saved by the keeper.

Davis then came close to a rare goal with a curling 30-yarder which the keeper tipped over for a corner.

Prime did extend their lead minutes later when Ferguson's tackle-cum-shot looped over the keeper and into the net!

It seemed as if the game was up as Valour players argued amongst themselves, while Prime continued to threaten with Sykes and Westcott again going close.

Taylor came on to save Sykes' hamstrings any more damage but his first touch nearly put Williams in trouble but the defender slid in to clear well.

Cary then had a moment of madness after trying to dribble the ball passed the Valour right-winger, he got tackled and then dragged his man back, and after unneccessary calls to the ref from the visitors, he was booked.

Goldsmith came on with 10 minutes left, replacing Ferguson who had netted his 7th goal of the season. What followed was a classic Prime self-destruction - reminiscent of their early days in the league.

A long ball was played through and Williams for once mis-timed his header, which skimmed off his head. The danger should have been cleared but Cary and Balcombe contrived to get in each other's way and the Valour striker was left to walk the ball into the net.

Valour tails were now up and on their next attack, they equalised after Prime failed to clear the danger and their number 10 was given the freedom of the penalty box to slot home an equaliser that even the visitors surely could not have seen coming.

Prime tried to snatch a late win, but despite a flurry of corners and long throws from Goldsmith, Valour held firm and left with a point.
