FC Revolution 2-0 Ashton Prime

Saturday 9th February 2013, Hayesbrook School 3G, Tonbridge

After just one match in 8 weeks, Prime finally got back to action on FC Revolution's 3G astroturf pitch at Hayesbrook School.

Prime had several absentees including goalkeeper Balcombe who was replaced between the sticks by emergency signing Jamie Barker. With Buckland, Davis and Ellis absent, Sander returned at left-back and Walker replaced Westcott in midfield. Nowak and Goldsmith made up a two-man bench.

The game started evenly with Revolution trying to get the ball out wide to make the most of the huge playing surface. Mazurkiewicz and Sander were both doing a good job of keeping their respective wingers in check, whilst Cary and Williams cut out several dangerous through-balls.

The first real chance came on 10 minutes when Revolution's midfielder hit a snap-shot from the edge of the box which Barker saved well on the stretch - even holding onto the ball in the process.

Prime were starting to threaten themselves with Walker and Abu getting the ball out to wingers Sykes and Henshall. Clear-cut chances were still hard to come by until Barker beat the offside trap to run onto a through-ball. He ran in at goal but the keeper saved his initial shot and then with the keeper on the floor, Barker's attempted chip did not have enough power and a Revolution defender got back to hook off the line.

Prime shaded the remainder of the half - despite Abu's booking for a late lunge - but their poor final ball was hampering their attempts to get their noses in front - Sykes woeful corner typified the problem just before the break.

Prime were generally happy with their first-half performance considering their rustiness and the unfamiliar playing surface - but their good work was soon undone.

The home side attacked from the kick-off and won a corner. The ball curled in towards the near post where Barker attempted to punch clear under pressure from a Revolution player. The ball skewed off towards goal and the Prime defender on the line could not jump high enough to keep it out.

The goal seemed to knock Prime out of their stride and suddenly they could not keep the ball or get out of their own half. Barker had to be alert to come off his line to clear a couple of times and Williams had to hook clear from under his own crossbar as the second goal seemed inevitable.

Eventually it came just after the hour mark as the home side's captain found space in the Prime box to beat Barker with a driven shot at his near post.

Nowak replaced Sander in a bid to wake Prime from their slumber - with Sykes switched to left-back.

A frustrated Barker was coming deeper and deeper to get the ball and with Ferguson marked by 3 defenders, Prime continued to struggle as the home side played keep-ball.

Goldsmith came on for Ferguson with 15 minutes left and at least his aerial threat meant that the ball did stick up front a bit more often.

With both sides tiring, Nowak suddenly came into the game with a couple of typically pacey runs down the left. From the second of these he skipped past three challenges before squeezing a cross in from the by-line which narrowly eluded Barker and rolled all the way across the face of the goal and away to safety.

The final whistle sounded soon after and Prime were left to reflect on their first competitive defeat of more than 1 goal since February 18th last year. Revolution's win, coupled with Woodlands' surprise defeat to Rusthall sends them top of the table but Leigh appear to be favourites for the title - and they visit Cadogan next weekend.
