Yalding & Laddingford 3-0 Ashton Prime
Saturday 2nd March 2013, Vicarage Road, Yalding
Prime were swept aside by their mid-table opponents following a second-half capitulation at Yalding.
The visitors made 3 changes to their starting lineup from their win over Leigh a fortnight ago with Sykes injured and Williams and Barker absent. Ellis came in at the back, Nowak took over down the left-wing and Ferguson replaced top-scorer Barker up-front as Prime stuck with a 4-3-3 formation.
Flamank had returned from his travels and he took his place on the bench alongside Davis, Buckland and Goldsmith.
Prime started well and although clear-cut chances were at a premium, they were definitely on top with Nowak and Henshall looking particularly dangerous.
Prime should have taken the lead on 20 minutes. The ball bounced up to waist height for Ferguson to slot home past the onrushing keeper, but he failed to make the right connection and the ball squirmed loose. Nowak tried to polish off the rebound, but his effort was cleared off the line.
Nowak then had a snap-shot well saved by the keeper as Prime continued to be the dominant force, before Abu curled a corner straight onto the bar and away to safety.
At the other end, Ellis and Cary were looking solid but it was obvious that Yalding's dangerman was their striker who was thrawted by Balcombe on a couple of occasions before the break.
At half-time Goldsmith was full of praise for Prime's efforts and all that was really lacking was the goal that their play had deserved. What followed was their worst 45 minutes of the season.
Yalding took the lead when they took a short corner to their captain and after Prime's midfield elected not to close him down, he had time to pick out a cross to the far post. In fact, he sliced his cross to perfection and it sailed into the top corner. Some may say this was fortunate but the fact that nobody closed him down did not go unnoticed by Goldsmith.
Things got worse 5 minutes later when a long punt down the middle was allowed to bounce by Ellis and their captain pounced to slot home his 2nd goal and leave The Numbers stunned.
Prime's efforts to get back into the game were being frustrated by Ferguson continually getting caught by the offside flag and players seemingly forgetting how to pass the ball to a blue shirt.
Abu, Westcott and Walker were trying manfully to turn the game around in the midfield area, but all were some way short of their normal level and Prime were heavily reliant upon the energetic Nowak and the industrious Henshall down the wings.
Nowak incensed the home players after putting in a perfectly reasonable challenge on their keeper when trying to latch onto a Westcott through-ball. The fact that Nowak made absolutely no contact with their Number 1 only made it more embarrassing that he felt the need to roll around on the floor and tell everyone that he needed to be substituted. To be amazement of everyone he was perfectly fine to carry on after a quick drink of water!
Prime moved Abu forward into a centre-forward role to give the isolated Ferguson some support, whilst Davis and Flamank soon replaced Sander and Ferguson.
Abu could have done better with a flick-header from Henshall's pin-point cross but as Prime pushed forward, it was no great surprise when their striker beat Balcombe to kill the game with 20 minutes to go.
Buckland came on for Mazurkiewicz and helped at least to quell the bleeding of goals, but with Flamank and Abu both guilty of drifting back into their more accustomed midfield positions, Prime still had absolutely nothing up front and it was no surprise that the home side kept their clean sheet.
Goldsmith cut a frustrated figure on the touchline and there will no doubt be changes next weekend for the trip to AFC Valour Reserves.
