Ashton Prime 2-0 East Peckham Juniors Reserves

Saturday 22nd September 2012, Cadogan Recreation Ground, Tunbridge Wells

Prime's squad size was tested to its limit in their first home game of the season, with as many as 10 players unavailable. The absentees included Davis, Henshall, Taylor and Barker - all of whom started in last-week's draw at Rusthall.

With manager Goldsmith attending Dave Ellis' wedding, Ian Goulding took the reigns and he introduced Mazurkiewicz, Sykes, Senior, Gibson and Fleming to the starting XI, with Buckland relegated to the bench where he joined new-boy Rob Gordon and the stand-in player/boss.

It was a fairly even opening to the game with the visitors' main threat coming from long clearances from their keeper - but Walker and Cary held firm. Meanwhile, Prime were popping the ball around well, with Senior and Abu linking up well in midfield and on 20 minutes, it was Senior, on his full debut, who lashed a 25-yarder just wide of the near post.

Moments later the same player had another effort go just wide as Prime sought to gain the upper hand.

But the warning signs were there and on 25 minutes, Balcombe was called into action to make a fine save - tipping the ball away for a corner.

Fleming had been busy up front and he glanced a header just wide after a fine cross from Flamank.

It remained goalless at the break and after some words of encouragement from Goulding and captain Abu, Prime set out to claim the 3 points in the second half.

After an hour, the skipper talked himself into a harsh booking for dissent - the player insisting he had merely asked the ref why he had given the free-kick East Peckham's way!

The breakthrough came minutes later when Ferguson's presence caused panic in the Juniors' defence and Fleming was on hand to slot home his first goal for the club.

Rob Gordon joined the fray just after the goal, replacing Gibson down the right-wing, and shortly afterwards, Buckland replaced the impressive Mazurkiewicz at right-back.

The 2nd goal arrived soon after as Ferguson held off his man to slot home and effectively kill the game off.

There was still time for a cameo from the ageless Goulding who replaced Ferguson for the closing minutes - extending his record as Prime's oldest ever player deep into his 40th year.

It was a fitting end for the stand-in boss who successfully guided The Numbers to joint-top of the table.
