Ashton Prime 2-0 Brenchley Wanderers

Saturday 13th October 2012, Cadogan Recreation Ground, Tunbridge Wells

After last week's break and their early cup exit at Hawkenbury, Prime returned to league action against Brenchley.

Goalkeeper Dan Balcombe was unavailable so Jamie Sykes took over the gloves and with Pete Henshall away, Matt Walker reverted to central-midfield with Alun Williams coming in at centre-back. Goldsmith was joined by the returning Ellis and Senior on a strong-looking bench.

The game was very even from the outset with Brenchley showing they were a much better side than their early season form would suggest.

Flamank was playing his last match before setting off on his travels to South America, and he continued his excellent early season form by looking dangerous down the left-wing.

In truth though, it was a fairly nondescript start with both sides stangely quiet. Brenchley probed but they were getting little change out of Cary and Williams who were both commanding in the air and strong in the tackle.

Full-backs Buckland and Mazurkiewicz were also keeping their wingers in check, but Sykes was still the busier keeper in the first 15 minutes - although he did not have any real saves to make.

Abu and Walker were embroiled in a very even contest with the Brenchley central-midfielders, but when Prime got the ball wide, Flamank and Fleming had the beating of their full-backs. Prime's best chance came after a jinking run down the right from Fleming who managed the get out of a seemingly blind alley, before playing a smart 1-2 with Flamank and then firing narrowly wide from 10 yards.

Betts went close with a couple of curling efforts from the edge of the box that both went just over the bar, but at the other end it needed a superb defensive block from Williams to deny Brenchley the lead after Prime failed to clear a corner effectively.

It was goalless at the interval but Goldsmith could not really criticise any of the XI for effort - they just needed to get the ball down more and get the ball wide.

Brenchley started the half well again and Prime were indebted to a fine save with his leg by Sykes.

Betts fired over the bar again from distance before Prime made changes on the hour mark with firstly Senior replacing Fleming down the right and then Ellis coming on for the impressive Buckland at left-back to make his first appearance of the season.

The game seemed to be heading for a stalemate, but then with 20 minutes left a ball dropped from out of the sky on the edge of the Brenchley box and captain Abu smashed a rocket of a volley into the net. The keeper got a hand to it, but had no chance of keeping it out - giving the midfielder his 4th goal of the season.

Brenchley immediately moved centre-back Turvey up front, but Prime's back 4 had looked assured all game and despite conceding a few corners, Sykes was not called into any serious action.

Prime looked likely to extend their lead and Ferguson had a shot on the turn well saved, before pulling another effort narrowly wide of the far post.

Goldsmith replaced Ferguson with 10 minutes left and with his first meaningful contribution, Prime doubled their lead and sealed the win. His long throw into the box caused panic and Senior kept the ball alive, before Flamank dinked a perfect left-foot chip in for Betts to powerfully head home his first goal for The Numbers.

Goldsmith should have got on the score-sheet himself, but he contrived to head Betts' inswinging corner over the bar (and over the fence!) from a couple of yards out!

Matter not - the final whistle sounded soon after and Prime had got their season back on track after their cup exit at Hawkenbury.

It's the chance for revenge next Saturday when Prime return to face the Hawks in the league.
