Ashton Prime 6-2 FC Revolution

Saturday 10th November 2012, Cadogan Recreation Ground, Tunbridge Wells

Despite heavy rain in the morning, the Cadogan pitch passed the pitch inspection, meaning that Prime could finally resume their league campaign.

The Numbers were without Ellis, Cary and Fleming from their last outing, but Matt Walker and Jamie Sykes were restored to the defence. Up-front Ferguson moved back to the starting XI, with Betts pushed out to right-wing. Senior joined Abu in central-midfield, with Henshall filling Fleming's void on the left. Buckland, Davis and new-signing Nowak were on the bench alongside Goldsmith.

Prime knocked the ball around confidently from the off and found themselves ahead after just 3 minutes when Senior released Abu down the left. The captain's deep, curling cross was nodded home at the far post by Barker.

Things got even better just a few minutes later when Barker again found space in the Revolution box to fire home with his left-foot.

Prime looked dangerous every time they went forward with Henshall and Betts putting dangerous balls into the box and Abu and Senior pulling the strings in midfield.

Revolution's defence may have been all at sea, but they did look dangerous going forward and Williams and Walker had to be alert to keep Prime's clean-sheet intact.

Prime increased their lead after 15 minutes when Ferguson converted at the second attempt after the keeper and defender on the line did well to block his first effort.

A feature of Prime's play in the first half was Sykes' buccaneering runs down the left and from one of his many teasing crosses, Barker completed his hat-trick.

The game was still not dead though and after Prime switched off momentarily, the visitors pulled one back. Balcombe did well to parry the first effort from Revolution's tall striker, but their midfielder was on hand to tap home the rebound into an empty net with Prime's defence conspicuous by its absence.

Prime then had to defend a flurry of corners, but they did so without further alarm and they soon restored their 4-goal advantage as Barker slammed home a rebound after the keeper made a decent half-stop.

Incredibly, with 10 minutes to go until the break, Prime made it 6-1 after Sykes burst down the left again as the home side broke quickly from a corner, Ferguson took over and coolly slotted home from an acute angle.

Barker, Betts, Henshall and then Ferguson with an acrobatic overhead-kick all nearly increased the score before the break, but when the whistle went, Prime were happy enough with a 6-1 lead.

It was obvious that the second half would be much harder work and The Numbers needed to guard against complacency.

FC Revolution were a completely different proposition after the break - snapping into tackles and forcing Prime back.

Williams and Walker were immense at the back though, repelling several dangerous attacks as Prime survived an early onslaught.

Mazurkiewicz was excellent throughout and his link-ups with Betts down the right gave Prime a good outlet as they gained a foot-hold on the half.

Davis replaced Senior on the hour mark, with Sykes moved up to left-wing and Henshall moved infield.

Revolution pulled one back with 25 minutes left after Walker brought down their striker in the box as he was set to latch onto a rebound after Balcombe made a good stop.

For the second game running, Balcombe saved the penalty, but the taker kept his cool to slot home the rebound.

Prime were grateful for the visitors spurning a couple of good chances to score a 3rd goal, but with Buckland and Nowak replacing the impressive duo of Ferguson and Sykes, Prime saw the game out well for a deserved; if slightly flattering; win.

The win keeps Prime firmly in the promotion picture, with a brace of games against cup-conquerors Hawkenbury III to come in the next fortnight.
