Ashton Prime 7-0 Speldhurst Rangers
Sunday 18th August 2013, Cadogan Recreation Ground, Tunbridge Wells
Prime got their pre-season up and running by hosting Speldhurst Rangers from the West Kent Sunday League.
Prime had a 15-man strong squad featuring new signings Steve Turvey, Dave Fitzgerald and Andy Harris as well as the returning 'keeper Lewis Kerton and there was a one-off appearance for former Speldhurst man Seb Fleming - now living in London.
Manager Ashley Goldsmith, starting his final term in charge of The Numbers was forced into refereeing the match after Speldhurst failed to come up with a ref of their own.
The match started evenly with chances few and far between and both sides struggling to find any rhythm. On 20 minutes though, Prime took the lead as Fleming's flick found Ferguson who finished expertly.
Prime doubled their lead soon after when centre-back Steve Turvey popped up in the Speldhurst box and fired the ball beyond the Rangers keeper for a debut goal.
The flood-gates had suddenly opened and Prime added a third goal on the 30-minute mark when the impressive Westcott drilled a low shot into the net from the edge of the box after a good link up with Fleming.
Prime immediately brought on their first batch of rolling subs - including Fitzgerald who slotted into Abu's central-midfield role and soon built up a good understanding with Westcott as Prime started to dominate.
Fitzgerald became the second debutant to find the net after he was given time and space to pick his spot and fire into the keeper's far corner.
Ferguson then wriggled clear of his marker to chip home Prime's 5th goal, before Fleming got on the end of a long punt upfield to make it 6-0 at the interval.
At the break, Goldsmith asked his team to try and pass the ball out from the back and not just to concentrate on hitting Fleming and Ferguson early.
Speldhurst had obviously used the interval to re-focus and they came out a much better side after the break.
Prime were funding it harder to work openings and their most dangerous outlet appeared to be left-back Sander who delighted the on-looking subs with a series of surging runs down the wing, matched by teasing crosses which nearly found Fleming and Ferguson.
More subs were made on the hour mark with Harris, Abu, Cary and Flamank returning.
Prime finally added to their goal tally when Fleming picked up the ball mid-way inside the Speldhurst half and drilled a low shot into the corner of the net for the goal of the game.
Speldhurst had their best spell of the game in the last 20 minutes and they should have had a consolation goal when Sykes handballed in the box and Goldsmith awarded a slightly harsh penalty in a bid to appease Speldhurst's whinging striker. He failed miserably to make the most of the opportunity though - striking his penalty straight at Kerton - the rebound going to safety.
The Prime stopper, sporting a dubious pebble-dashed jersey excelled moments before with a superb save at his near-post when Speldhurst's right-winger seemed certain to pull one back.
At the final whistle, Prime were happy with their display and with how their new signings had gelled with their established squad members. Next week Prime return to Saturday afternoons with the visit of the newly established Canterbury Monument in their first ever match. Prime will hope to continue the momentum from their opening day win.
