Leigh 1-2 Ashton Prime

Saturday 7th December 2013, Leigh Village Green

Ashton Prime battled back from a goal down at the break to claim an excellent win and take Leigh's place at the top of Division 2.

The visitors were hindered by a late withdrawal from Matt Westcott, leaving just Goldsmith and Davis on the bench. Mazurkiewicz replaced Sander at right-back in their only change from last week's starting XI.

It was a predictably tight opening with neither keeper forced into serious action, but Ellis and Abu were doing well to quell the impact of Leigh's central midfielder who dominated the reverse fixture at Cadogan.

Prime went behind midway through the half when Leigh's tricky striker beat Turvey and Sykes down the right and his cut-back from the by-line deflected up off a defender to their midfielder and he floated a header over Kerton from just outside the 6-yard box.

The wheels were threatening to come off for The Numbers when Turvey sustained a foot injury and then shortly afterwards, Ellis took a full-blooded cross flush in the face and he was left dazed and confused and was eventually withdrawn at the break as he said that he could not remember anything from the match!

It was probably a lead that Leigh deserved at the break but Prime had their chances with Nowak and Excell both testing the keeper.

Turvey was still complaining of a bruised foot at the break, but Goldsmith convinced him to carry on (by saying "you'll be fine mate"!). One change was made with Rich Davis coming on at left-back with Sykes moved into central-midfield to replace Ellis who was still looking like he'd seen a ghost.

Leigh pressed hard for a second and they were a lick of paint away from doubling their lead when their right-back nearly caught Kerton out at his near post with a free-kick from 25 yards. But Prime's back 4 with Turvey and Cary rock-solid stemmed the tide and soon enough the two centre-backs were the unlikely combination to get Prime back in it when Turvey's cross was nodded home by Cary. The defender on the line should probably have done better as it wasn't exactly a bullet-header but it was enough to level matters.

Prime hit the front in fortuitous circumstances 5 minutes later when Henshall's cross from the right sailed over the keeper and nestled in the far corner.

Ferguson, Nowak and Excell all worked manfully to hold the ball up and run the ball into the channels and with 10 minutes left, Goldsmith brought himself on for Fergie and he won a few headers and occupied the back 4 as Prime ran the clock down well.

Leigh battled hard for an equaliser and they were denied what looked a stone-wall penalty when a shot hit Turvey's arm - but Prime held on and they go top of the league for the first time this season.
