Ashton Prime 0-6 Tonbrige Athletic
Saturday 14th December 2013, Cadogan Recreation Ground, Tunbridge Wells
A second half collapse saw The Numbers meekly concede top spot to their Tonbridge-based opponents in a game marred by a horrific broken leg for Prime debutant Darrell Sparks near the end.
Prime trailed 1-0 at the break thanks to some heroics from keeper Lew Kerton who thrawted both of their strikers but was finally beaten when a deflected shot wrong-footed him with 10 minutes left in the half.
Prime had already introduced Sparks after just 15 minutes when target man Pete Ferguson was forced off after taken a kick to the back of his calf.
In the second half, Athletic doubled their lead from a corner on the hour mark and subsequently Prime fell apart with Tom Cary having a woeful half an hour which included an own goal.
In truth several Prime players were guilty of dropping their heads and allowing the visitors to walk in goals at will - leaving the excellent Kerton fuming.
Prime's misery was compounded when Sparks, who was lively throughout and was probably Prime's best outfield player was the victim of a mis-timed tackle from the Tonbridge midfielder 5 minutes from time. With Sparks writhing in pain and an ambulance called for, referee Delves called an early end to the proceedings.
The injury was later confirmed as being a double break to the ankle which was also dislocated. Sparks is to be kept in hospital for 2 days and it is likely that the ankle will need to be pinned.
Tonbridge were by far the best side Prime have played this season and they will surely go on to win the Division. It seemed a questionable decision to put them into Division 2 in the first place - given how many 1st Division Sunday players they have but their strong, physical approach was certainly too much for Prime today - even if the scoreline was harsh on the hosts.
