West Farleigh Reserves 3-3 Ashton Prime (Prime won 4-3 on pens)
Saturday 29th March 2014, Charlton Lane, West Farleigh
The Numbers headed to the outskirts of Maidstone to face West Farleigh who had beaten Prime twice previously in the Tunbridge Wells Charity Cup.
Prime were missing Henshall, Sander and Westcott, but with Fitzgerald returning to the squad, they arrived with 4 subs. Turvey returned to the heart of the defence with Ellis and Abu back in midfield.
Up-front Goldsmith joined Ferguson with Excell filling the Henshall void on the right-wing. Buckland, Davis, Flamank and Fitzgerald were on the bench.
Prime kicked off in bright sunshine and they were soon into their stride with Goldsmith winning several flick-ons as they pinned the home side back - seeking to make the most of the advantage of the slope and the wind at their backs.
Ferguson burst through and was denied by the keeper as Prime continued to knock on the door, but the home side were coming into the game with their skillful central midfielders to the fore.
Prime's defence looked very solid though and they were limiting Farleigh to shots from distance although 'keeper Kerton was obviously getting bored as he called "keepers" for a ball that he was never going to get to, but Turvey was on hand to smuggle the ball off the line after their striker poked towards an open goal.
Nowak and Excell were looking dangerous for Prime but Sykes' shots from distance were as close as Prime came to opening the scoring before the break.
Flu-victim Mazurkiewicz was replaced by Flamank at half-time as Prime sought to get the goal that they deserved. The goal came 5 minutes into the half.
Sykes took a quick throw down the left and released Nowak who beat his man and got to the by-line before cutting the ball back to Goldsmith to slot a left-footed side footer into the far corner.
Ferguson nearly doubled Prime's lead when he tackled the West Farleigh defender straight from the kick-off but again his shot was smothered this time by a mixture of defender and keeper.
There seemed to be only one winner, but the home side won a corner which curled in on the breeze and the hapless Cary headed past Kerton and into his own net.
Things went from bad to worse when the home side's striker won a free-kick on the edge of the box and he got up to curl the ball around the wall and into the far corner to put Prime behind.
The hungover Ellis was immediately replaced by Davis with the hard-working Sykes moved into midfield. Prime were running out of time and when Turvey narrowly failed to meet Goldsmith's long throw it seemed as if they were heading out.
Goldsmith replaced himself with Buckland and soon after Prime sent the game into extra-time when Sykes' free-kick held up in the wind for Abu to smash a 'David Platt-esque' volley past the keeper and into the roof of the net.
With several players cramping up, it seemed as if extra time might be a struggle but they were totally dominant in the first period but still they were struggling to create any good chances.
With 5 minutes of the second period of extra-time gone, Excell took the ball down in the box and turned inside a couple of defenders before bobbling the ball beyond the keeper and into the net.
It seemed as if it would be the winner, but Prime shot themselves in the foot when a long ball to the back post was not cleared and their defender beat Kerton with a fierce shot.
So it went to penalties and the first 5 hands to go up were selected:
Abu: Scored - top right - keeper no chance;
West Farleigh: Scored - Kerton ran across his line and their player rolled the ball down the middle!
Excell: Scored - He would say he did the keeper with the eyes but it went pretty much straight down the middle and the keeper had moved!
West Farleigh: Scored - Good penalty in the corner.
Sykes: Scored - thumped into the corner to the keeper's left.
West Farleigh: Scored - Kerton nearly saved it but off his knee and in.
Turvey: Scored - Coolly done - pulled it into the corner to the keeper's right.
West Farleigh: SAVED! Kerton made a good save to his right.
Cary: SAVED! This to win it, but the keeper stayed central and made a comfortable save.
West Farleigh: MISSED! Over the bar! Prime win!!!
Overall it was a game that Prime should have won easily but at least they got over the line in the end and are in to the Semi-Finals.
