Ashton Prime 1-4 Yalding & Laddingford
Saturday 28th September 2013, Cadogan Recreation Ground, Tunbridge Wells
The saying goes that there is nothing worse than a bad loser. True - most of the time, but I would argue being bad winners is a lot worse and that is exactly what our Division 1 guests were today.
Yalding ran out deserving winners although the 4-1 scoreline was very flattering and hard on Prime who had run themselves into the ground and led their fancied opponents for 65 minutes of the game.
Unfortunately Yalding's manager saw fit to mock Prime substitute David Ellis who had endured a difficult half an hour after replacing the injured Tom Cary on the hour mark.
We have all had days to forget but the last thing you need is an experienced manager of your opposition rubbing it in your face. It was disgusting and I hope when he reflects on what he said he will be embarrassed with himself.
The finalé took the shine off an excellent performance, full of guts and passion from the home side who more than matched Yalding for the majority of the game.
Prime made 2 enforced changes to their starting XI with Davis and Westcott absent. Buckland and Excell came into the side, with Nowak, Ellis and Sander back on the bench.
Yalding started confidently but Kerton made some stunning saves and the back 4, marshaled by the excellent Turvey were holding firm.
As the half wore on, Prime started to get a foot-hold with Sykes' shot on the turn testing the keeper and Abu having a couple of drives from distance saved.
With 10 minutes to go until the break, the hard-working Ferguson blocked a clearance and the ricochet put him clean through and despite seemingly dwelling on the ball, he managed to roll the ball under the keeper to give Prime the lead.
Excell was finding space in his comeback game and Henshall and Sykes were both prominent as Prime pushed for a second before half-time.
Fitzgerald managed to talk himself into the book for querying one of many mysterious decisions by the ref.
Prime knew that Yalding would come out all guns blazing after the break, but with Kerton making another excellent one on one save, Prime seemed to have ridden the storm and when Sykes' through-ball put Ferguson clean through, the Numbers were set to establish a commanding lead, but this time the keeper saved well and the striker could not quite get a toe to the rebound.
Prime's performance was typified by a crunching tackle by Buckland who put in a great shift at right-back before giving way to Sander.
Prime's centre-backs were both in the wars with Cary stubbing a toe and Turvey's sprained ankle deteriorating through the game. Cary gave way first with jet-setter Ellis making his first appearance of the season, fresh from a flight from New York the day before.
A rare mistake by the sub was to prove costly as he got caught in at least 3 minds and got robbed by their striker who rolled the ball across the edge of the box for their midfielder to finish into the corner - finally beating Kerton.
Prime were being forced back and with 10 minutes left a back-pedaling Fitzgerald flicked the ball over Kerton from a deep Yalding free-kick and the visitors led for the first time.
Turvey succumbed to his injury and Nowak came on down the left-wing with Sykes now an auxiliary centre-back.
Ellis was then robbed on the half-way line and Yalding broke down the right and despite Kerton making another wonderful save, the rebound was forced home and then the Yalding manager decided to open his mouth - sending Goldsmith into a fit of rage.
As all hell broke loose on the touchline between the managers, Yalding added a fourth with their midfielder smashing a free-kick from the half-way line over Kerton who was standing well out of his goal, trying to mediate with the ongoings on the sidelines.
Prime can take plenty of positives from the match as they go on to face table-topping FC Revolution next week, but their Chairman's Trophy jinx continues - the club are still winless in the competition!
