Ashton Prime 3-4 FC Revolution

Saturday 5th October 2013, Cadogan Recreation Ground, Tunbridge Wells

Prime went into their match with the 100% league leaders missing about 10 players - the 10th being tonsilitis victim Lew Kerton and with backup keeper Jamie Sykes absent, manager Ashley Goldsmith was forced to don the gloves behind a back 4 which missed Turvey and Buckland - but Williams made his first start of the season and Sander came in at left-back.

In midfield, with no Westcott or Fitzgerald, Ellis joined captain Abu and Flamank started on the left of midfield with Sykes away. Harris, Davis and Nowak made up the bench.

Revolution knocked the ball around well from the off and Prime seemed spellbound by their one-touch passing moves as they found space in front of Prime's back 4 to thread testing balls through to their pacy strikers.

Goldsmith had already made two last-ditch interceptions outside of his box when at the third time, the Revolution striker beat him to the ball before chipping into the vacant goal off the inside of the post.

There was almost a carbon-copy 10 minutes later as a through-ball picked out their striker's diagonal run and with Prime appealing for offside, their striker rounded Goldsmith and rolled home.

It was starting to look like a long day ahead for Prime when a cross from the right fell between Cary and Goldsmith and as they both hesitated, Revolution's midfielder stuck out a leg and rolled it under the stand-in keeper.

Revolution were obviously keen to test out Goldsmith and their right-back hit the bar with a 30-yarder on the angle, but Prime cleared the rebound.

Prime seemed to gain some momentum after Sander clattered into three successive tackles in the same period of play and suddenly Prime were starting to get close to their opponents and come into the game themselves. Ellis also made some trademark sliding tackles and the home side started to come into the game.

They pulled one back when Abu's delivery broke for Ferguson who smashed into the corner of the net for his 5th goal of the season.

But Prime shot themselves in the foot as they allowed Revolution to get clean through from a pass from midfield and Goldsmith was helpless to stop their 4th goal.

Crucially Prime pulled a 2nd goal back just before the break as Henshall's low corner was lashed home by Cary at the near post to put a different complexion on the game for the second 45.

Prime were urged to continue their improvement after the break and they knew that the next goal would be crucial.

The visitors started brightly again but Goldsmith this time saved a deflected shot at his near post and Prime defended well from several corners as they hung on in the game.

Eventually the home side started to assert themselves with Flamank and Henshall getting involved down either flank and Nowak also seeing plenty of the ball when he replaced Henshall.

Prime made it a nervous ending when they won a free-kick 25 yards out and Flamank's curling effort came back off the bar, before Williams nodded home his first goal for the club with 10 minutes to go.

The stricken Ellis and Excell had been replaced by Davis and Harris as Prime battled for an equaliser.

Their cause was not helped by some play-acting by Revolution's winger to win a couple of free-kicks and also the visitors taking the ball to the corners to run the clock down.

But Prime still nearly forced an equaliser when a ball in from the right was flicked goalwards by Ferguson but the visiting keeper did just enough to claw the ball to safety with a couple of Prime players inches away from forcing the ball home.

It was a positive dressing room at the end of the game after a battling display and some of the players missing today may find they have to wait to get back in.
